For most construction companies, the best drone is the DJI Matrice 4E: a 4/3 mapping camera with a mechanical shutter, built-in RTK accuracy, two telephoto cameras for close inspection and 49 minutes of rated flight time. The Mavic 3 Enterprise (3E) is the lower-cost mapping option, a DJI Dock automates daily progress flights, and the Air 3S covers simple progress photos and marketing video. All commercial site flights need a Part 107 pilot.

DJI Matrice 4E
The Matrice 4E is DJI's current mapping drone in a folding airframe. Why it suits construction:
- Mechanical shutter on the 4/3, 20 MP wide camera (down to 1/2000 s), so mapping photos don't suffer rolling-shutter distortion at speed.
- RTK positioning. DJI rates RTK fix accuracy at 1 cm + 1 ppm horizontal and 1.5 cm + 1 ppm vertical, which cuts or removes the need for ground control points on many jobs.
- Fast capture. A 0.5 second minimum photo interval keeps mapping missions efficient.
- Inspection zoom. 48 MP cameras at 70 mm and 168 mm equivalent let you check facades, rebar and roofs without flying close.
- Laser rangefinder for measuring distance to a target, up to 1,800 m.
It has no IP rating, so it's not for rain. Compare it with its thermal sibling in Matrice 4T vs 4E.
DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise
The Mavic 3E also has a 4/3, 20 MP mechanical-shutter wide camera, plus a 12 MP tele with 56× hybrid zoom. It's smaller and usually costs less than the Matrice 4E. Choose it if you mostly map and don't need the 4E's longer tele cameras. The thermal 3T version helps with roof and envelope inspections.
DJI Dock
A dock keeps a drone on site, launches it on schedule, lands it and recharges it, with flights managed remotely in DJI FlightHub 2. That's ideal for capturing the same route every day.
- Dock 3 pairs with the Matrice 4D or 4TD, has an IP56 dock and IP55 drone, a 10 km operating radius under DJI's test conditions, and can be mounted on vehicles.
- Dock 2 pairs with the Matrice 3D or 3TD.
Remote, unattended operations involve FAA approvals beyond basic Part 107. Talk to us before you plan a dock deployment.
DJI Air 3S
For weekly progress photos, client updates and marketing video, a consumer drone is enough. The Air 3S has a 1-inch main camera and a 70 mm tele, and costs far less than an enterprise drone. It isn't designed for survey-grade mapping.
How construction teams use drones
- Progress capture. Fly the same automated route each week so images line up for comparison.
- Orthomosaic maps. Stitched top-down maps for site planning and as-built checks.
- Stockpile volumes. 3D models measure piles of gravel, soil and aggregate.
- Inspections. Zoom in on roofs, facades and cranes without lifts or scaffolding.
- Safety and logistics. Overview shots for site layout and staging.
For heavy survey work, larger platforms carry dedicated payloads such as the Zenmuse L2 LiDAR. See best drone for mapping.
What to check before buying
- Accuracy needs. Survey-grade work needs RTK, from a network service or a D-RTK 3 base station, plus a check against known points.
- Software. Plan your processing workflow, such as DJI Terra or your existing mapping platform.
- Pilots. Every pilot needs a Part 107 certificate and current recurrent training.
- Airspace. Many urban sites sit in controlled airspace. Plan for LAANC.
- Insurance. General contractors usually require a certificate of insurance.
Quick answers
Can I use a Mini or Air drone for site mapping? For rough maps, yes. For measurements you'll rely on, use a mechanical shutter and RTK.
Do I need Part 107 for my own company's site? Yes. Any flight that supports a business is commercial.
Are these drones still available in the US? Models authorized before the FCC's December 2025 decision can still be sold.
