DJI gimbal protectors: when to use them (and when to take them off)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

A gimbal protector, which DJI calls a storage cover on some models, is the clip-on cover that holds a drone's camera still and shields the lens while it's packed away. DJI's manuals say the same thing for every current model: fit it whenever the drone isn't in use, and remove it before you power on. Leaving it on at startup blocks the gimbal's self-check and can trigger errors.

Gimbal protector routine
DJI's manuals say to remove the gimbal protector before powering on, because the gimbal moves during self-checks, and to fit it again whenever the drone is stored.

Why the protector matters

The gimbal is the most delicate part of a camera drone. Its tiny motors and ribbon cable hold the camera steady to a fraction of a degree, and a knock in a bag can bend the arm or damage a motor. The protector:

  • Locks the gimbal so it can't swing during transport
  • Covers the lens from scratches and dust
  • Takes pressure off the gimbal arms and cable

Why you must remove it before powering on

When a DJI drone powers on, the gimbal runs a self-test, moving through its range to calibrate. If the protector is holding it, the motors push against it. DJI says leaving it on may affect the aircraft's self-diagnostics. Typical results are a "gimbal motor overloaded" warning or a camera that sits tilted. If you've seen that, start with gimbal motor overloaded.

By model

Drone What DJI calls it Notes from DJI's manual
Neo Gimbal protector Press down to remove; remove before powering on
Flip Gimbal protector Press both sides to remove; also peel off the one-time rubber cover
Mini 4 Pro Gimbal protector Store with the propeller holder too
Mini 5 Pro Storage cover Remove before powering on, attach when not in use
Air 3 and Air 3S Gimbal protector Remove and unfold arms before powering on
Avata 2 Gimbal protector Set the camera forward and level before fitting; peel off lens stickers before first use
Mavic 4 Pro Storage cover Adjust gimbal angle and props slightly so it seats securely

How to put it back on

  1. Power off the drone.
  2. Turn the camera so it faces forward and sits level. You can gently move it by hand when the drone is off.
  3. Fit the protector's clips into the slots on the drone body. DJI's general guide: snap the narrow upper buckle in first, then press the wider lower buckle into place.
  4. Check that it's secure and doesn't press the camera at an angle.

Never force it. If it won't seat, the camera isn't straight.

Lost or broken protector?

DJI sells replacements for most models. Until you have one, pack the drone in a case with a molded camera pocket so nothing presses on the gimbal. Don't use tape or rubber bands, which can leave residue or put pressure on the arm.

Lens protectors on FPV drones

On the Avata 2, the camera sits behind the front of the frame and takes hits in crashes. The protective film on a new drone is for shipping, and DJI says to peel it off before first use. For crash damage, the gimbal and camera are covered by DJI Care Refresh for a fee.
