Drone laws in Jamaica: flying there as a US tourist

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Yes, you can fly a drone in Jamaica on vacation. The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) says recreational pilots don't need a permit, but they must follow its operating guidelines, which are stricter than US rules: max 400 ft, within 500 m of you, at least 50 m from people, 5 km from airports and helipads, in daylight, and with no FPV or pre-programmed automatic flights. Any paid or professional flying needs a Special Aerial Work Permit from the JCAA.

The JCAA says recreational pilots need no permit but must follow its guidelines. Paid work needs a Special Aerial Work Permit.

Recreational vs professional

The JCAA splits drone pilots into two groups:

  • Recreational operators or hobbyists: fly for fun. No permit, but follow the guidelines below.
  • Professional operators (commercial or non-commercial): any business-related flying, including aerial photography for a client, surveys or inspections. They need a Special Aerial Work Permit, subject to JCAA criteria.

If a hotel, wedding couple or tour company asks you to film for them, you are a professional operator in Jamaica's eyes.

JCAA rules for hobby flights

According to the JCAA, a drone must not be flown:

  • Above 400 ft (122 m) above ground level
  • More than 500 m (1,640 ft) from the pilot, or beyond unaided visual range
  • Using FPV goggles or a computer-aided view
  • Over or within 152 m (500 ft) of an organized open-air crowd
  • Over or within 50 m (165 ft) of any person. During takeoff and landing you may come closer, but never within 30 m.
  • Over private or public property or a home without permission
  • In restricted or prohibited airspace
  • Within 5 km (16,500 ft) of an aerodrome or helipad
  • Autonomously or on pre-programmed automatic flights
  • At night or in low visibility

The drone must also have a fail-safe that lands it if the radio link is lost. DJI's return-to-home covers this; set the RTH altitude above local trees and buildings before your first flight.

The no-autonomous-flight rule matters for small drones. Waypoints and some intelligent modes count as pre-programmed flight. Fly manually in Jamaica.

Where to fly

Montego Bay's Sangster International and Kingston's Norman Manley airports put 5 km circles over busy areas. Resort stretches in Negril and Ocho Rios are calmer, but hotels often ban drones on their grounds. Popular attractions such as Dunn's River Falls are crowded and privately managed, so ask first. Over open water, keep the 50 m buffer from swimmers and boats.

Bringing the drone in

Jamaica Customs treats a single drone for personal use like other personal electronics. Keep the receipt handy. Questions about flying should go to the JCAA's Flight Safety Division at uavrequests@jcaa.gov.jm; the guidelines are on the JCAA website.

Which drone to bring

  • DJI Mini 4 Pro: 249 g, omnidirectional sensing, reliable return-to-home.
  • DJI Mini 5 Pro: 249 g with a 1-inch sensor for sunsets in Negril.
  • DJI Neo: 135 g. Its tricks are automated, so use manual control under Jamaica's rules.

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
