Drone laws in Oklahoma (2026)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Oklahoma has no state drone license. Recreational pilots need the free FAA TRUST certificate and commercial pilots need a Part 107 certificate, plus FAA registration for drones of 250 g or more. Oklahoma bans flying under 400 ft over critical infrastructure such as refineries, substations and pipelines, has a 2022 drone privacy law, and requires a permit to fly in state parks.

Drone laws in Oklahoma
Oklahoma follows FAA rules for pilots, bans flying under 400 ft over critical infrastructure, limits drone surveillance and landings on private land, and requires state park permits.

Do you need a drone license in Oklahoma?

Not from the state. FAA rules apply:

  • Recreational: pass the free TRUST test. Register with the FAA ($5, 3 years) if your drone weighs 250 g or more.
  • Commercial: a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate for real estate, oil field, ag and inspection work.
  • Airspace: Oklahoma City and Tulsa have Class C airspace, and Tinker, Vance, Altus and Fort Sill add military airspace. Use LAANC and stay at or below 400 ft.

Oklahoma state drone laws

  • Critical infrastructure (Okla. Stat. tit. 3, 3-322): you can't fly below 400 ft over a critical infrastructure facility, let a drone touch one, or fly close enough to interfere with its operations. The list includes refineries, power plants and substations, chemical plants, water plants, gas compressor stations, rail and port facilities, broadcast towers, dams, and fenced aboveground pipelines. Facilities generally must be fenced or posted. The current law has exceptions, including the owner's consent and FAA-authorized commercial operators. Bills to tighten it have been introduced, so check for changes.
  • Privacy (tit. 21, 1743, 2022): it's a misdemeanor to fly onto private property or into the airspace within 400 ft above it to eavesdrop or surveil someone, to use a drone to record a person where they expect privacy, or to land a drone on private property without the owner's consent. Emergency safety landings and incidental capture during legitimate commercial or government work are exempt.
  • Hunting: the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation bans using drones to scout, locate, drive, harass or take wildlife, and restricts drones on wildlife management areas.

Where you can fly in Oklahoma

  • State parks: a permit is required to fly a drone in Oklahoma State Parks, and park managers can close areas to drones. Commercial filming has a separate permit. Call the park first.
  • NPS sites: banned at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and other NPS units.
  • Wildlife management areas: drone use is restricted. Check with ODWC.
  • Lakes: many large lakes are Army Corps of Engineers land. Ask the project office.

Before you fly in Oklahoma

  1. Check airspace and TFRs in B4UFLY or Aloft.
  2. Map refineries, substations, pipelines and tank farms along your route.
  3. Don't land on or film private property without permission.
  4. Carry your TRUST certificate or Part 107 card.

Plains wind and spring storms can ground small drones, so check the forecast. A sub-250 g drone like the DJI Mini 5 Pro or Mini 4 Pro needs no recreational registration. See flying in wind, and read the statutes at the Oklahoma Legislature.
