Drone laws in Wyoming (2026)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Wyoming has no state drone license. Recreational pilots need the free FAA TRUST certificate and commercial pilots need a Part 107 certificate, plus FAA registration for drones of 250 g or more. Wyoming's 2025 critical infrastructure law bans intentionally photographing or loitering over sites like refineries, substations and dams, and hunting rules ban using drones to locate big game from August 1 through January 31. Yellowstone and Grand Teton ban drones.

Drone laws in Wyoming
Wyoming follows FAA rules for pilots, bans drone photography and loitering at critical infrastructure since 2025, and limits drones for hunting.

Do you need a drone license in Wyoming?

Not from the state. FAA rules apply:

  • Recreational: pass the free TRUST test. Register with the FAA ($5, 3 years) if your drone weighs 250 g or more.
  • Commercial: a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and a registered drone.
  • Airspace: Jackson Hole, Casper, Cheyenne and other airports have controlled airspace, and F.E. Warren Air Force Base has restricted areas. Use LAANC and stay at or below 400 ft.

Wyoming state drone laws

  • Critical infrastructure (W.S. 19-13-503, 2025): passed over the governor's veto, this law makes it an offense to fly a drone over or near critical infrastructure to intentionally photograph it, to intentionally loiter, or to further another crime. Covered sites include refineries, chemical plants, water plants, dams, power plants and substations, high-voltage lines, communication towers, gas facilities, railroads, courts, jails, military bases, hospitals with air ambulances and mining infrastructure. A first offense is a misdemeanor and repeat offenses are felonies. FAA-authorized operators flying within that authorization, owners, and landowners over their own land are exempt.
  • Low or dangerous flight (W.S. 10-4-303): flying so low that you interfere with the use of the land below, or in a way that's imminently dangerous, is a misdemeanor. Landing on someone else's land without consent is unlawful, except forced landings.
  • Hunting: Game and Fish rules ban using any aircraft, drones included, to spot or locate big game for taking from August 1 through January 31, and trophy game during any open season.

Wyoming has no general drone trespass law. A 2025 bill to create one didn't pass.

Where you can fly in Wyoming

  • National parks: banned at Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Devils Tower and other NPS sites. See flying at Yellowstone and Grand Teton.
  • State parks and historic sites: drone use is permission-based. Get written permission from the park superintendent first.
  • National forests and BLM land: generally allowed outside wilderness areas and TFRs. Much of the Bridger-Teton is wilderness.
  • Jackson Hole: the airport sits inside Grand Teton National Park. See Jackson Hole.

Before you fly in Wyoming

  1. Check airspace and TFRs in B4UFLY or Aloft.
  2. Don't loiter over or photograph refineries, substations or dams.
  3. Keep drones away from big game in the fall.
  4. Carry your TRUST certificate or Part 107 card.

Wind is constant across Wyoming, so check gusts and keep a battery reserve. A sub-250 g drone like the DJI Mini 5 Pro or Mini 4 Pro needs no recreational registration. Read the statutes at the Wyoming Legislature.

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
