You can fly most DJI drones in the cold, down to their rated limit of 14°F (-10°C). Below about 41°F (5°C), battery capacity drops sharply, so flight time shrinks and the battery can lose voltage suddenly under load. Keep batteries warm until takeoff, wait for DJI Fly to say the battery is warmed up, fly gently and land earlier than usual. Don't fly in snow, freezing fog or below 14°F.

Temperature limits for DJI drones
DJI publishes the same operating range for its current consumer drones:
| Item | Range | In Fahrenheit |
|---|---|---|
| Operating temperature (Mini 3, Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Neo, Air 3, Air 3S, Mavic 3 Pro, Mavic 4 Pro) | -10° to 40° C | 14° to 104° F |
| Battery capacity sharply reduced | -10° to 5° C | 14° to 41° F |
| Battery can't be used | Below -10° C | Below 14° F |
| Battery charging | 5° to 40° C | 41° to 104° F |
For the Air 3S and Mavic 4 Pro, DJI says to warm the battery to at least 50°F (10°C) before a cold-weather takeoff. For the Mini 4 Pro, DJI says battery temperature above 68°F (20°C) gives the best performance. Model details: Mini 4 Pro, Air 3S, Mavic 4 Pro.
What cold does to a drone
- Less capacity. A cold lithium battery can't deliver its full charge, so a 30 minute battery may give you far less.
- Voltage sag. Under hard acceleration, a cold battery's voltage can drop fast. That can trigger a forced landing even when the percentage looked fine.
- Less wind resistance. DJI notes cold batteries reduce how well the drone holds against wind.
- Ice. Freezing fog or drizzle can build ice on propellers, which cuts lift and makes the drone shake.
- Your hands and screen. Fingers go numb and phone batteries die fast. Some phones shut down in the cold.
Step by step: a winter flight
- Charge indoors the night before. Batteries won't charge below 41°F, so don't try in a cold car.
- Keep batteries warm. Carry them in an inside jacket pocket or an insulated bag. Some pilots use a hand warmer next to the bag, not touching the battery.
- Insert the battery just before flying. Power on and leave the drone running on the ground for a minute or two. The battery warms itself slightly.
- Wait for the prompt. DJI Fly warns when the battery is too cold. Take off once it says the battery is warmed up.
- Hover first. Hold a low hover for about a minute and watch the battery level and voltage.
- Fly gently and close. Avoid Sport mode bursts and steep climbs in the first few minutes.
- Land with 30% or more. Cold batteries drop quickly at the end.
- Swap and rewarm. Put the used battery back in your pocket. Let it warm before charging.
Snow, frost and condensation
- Snow. DJI says not to fly in snow. Consumer drones aren't water resistant, and snow melts on warm motors and boards. See can you fly a drone in the rain.
- Snowy ground. White snow can confuse exposure and the downward vision sensors. Take off from a landing pad or a clear patch.
- Frost on props. Wipe propellers and check them before every flight.
- Coming inside. Moving a cold drone into a warm room causes condensation on the lens and inside the body. Leave it in its closed case for 30 minutes or more so it warms slowly.
Common mistakes
- Trusting the percentage. In the cold, 40% can turn into 15% in a minute.
- Flying a battery straight out of a freezing car.
- Charging a cold battery right after a flight. Let it reach room temperature.
- Forgetting the controller and phone. Keep them warm too.
- Flying far over a frozen lake. If the battery quits, the drone goes through the ice.
Quick answers
How cold is too cold to fly a drone? Below 14°F (-10°C) for current DJI drones. Wind chill doesn't change the battery's temperature, but wind does make flying harder.
Will cold damage my battery? Flying within DJI's range is fine. Storing batteries in a freezing car for long periods isn't. See drone battery care.
Does a bigger drone handle cold better? Larger drones have more power to spare, so they cope with cold and wind better. The rated temperature range is the same.
Spare batteries make winter flying easier, since you can keep two warm while one flies. The Mini 4 Pro battery is $109, or get three with the Fly More Combo. Windy too? Read flying a drone in wind.
