DJI Mavic 3 Pro gimbal motor overloaded or stuck: how to fix it

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

"Gimbal motor overloaded" or a stuck gimbal on the DJI Mavic 3 Pro usually means the gimbal was blocked or weighed down when it tried to center itself. The common culprits are the gimbal protector left on, an unofficial filter or lens adding weight, or powering on on uneven ground. Clear it, restart on a flat surface, and run gimbal calibration in DJI Fly.

Mavic 3 Pro gimbal fixes
The Mavic 3 Pro's three-camera gimbal is heavy and precise. Most overload warnings come from something blocking or weighing it down at startup.

Why the Mavic 3 Pro gimbal overloads

The Mavic 3 Pro's 3-axis gimbal carries three cameras: the 4/3 Hasselblad main camera plus 70 mm and 166 mm telephotos. It's balanced precisely for that load. DJI's manual says a gimbal motor may enter protection mode when:

  • The aircraft is on uneven ground and the gimbal is obstructed
  • The gimbal takes an excessive external force, such as in a collision

DJI also warns not to add any payload other than an official accessory, because it can make the gimbal work abnormally or permanently damage a motor. And it says heavy fog or cloud can wet the gimbal and cause a temporary failure until it dries.

Fixes to try, in order

  1. Remove the gimbal protector before power-on. DJI says to put it back on when the drone isn't in use.
  2. Check filters. Third-party filters or clip-on lenses add weight the gimbal isn't tuned for. Use DJI's Mavic 3 Pro ND filter set, make sure it's fully seated, or test without any filter.
  3. Restart on a flat, hard surface. Keep hands off while the gimbal moves through its startup check.
  4. Look for grit. With the drone off, move the camera gently. Rough movement means debris near a motor. Use a hand blower only.
  5. Dry it out if you flew through mist or cloud.
  6. Update firmware for the aircraft and controller in DJI Fly.
  7. Calibrate. In DJI Fly camera view, open settings, go to Control, and run Gimbal Calibration (DJI's manual lists it with the gimbal settings there). Keep the drone level and still.
  8. Recenter the gimbal from the same Control page if it points the wrong way.

If the image drifts off level only during flight, DJI's usual fix is to calibrate the IMU and compass. See DJI gimbal not level.

When it's damaged

Start a repair if:

  • The warning comes back on flat ground with no protector or filter
  • The camera hangs, buzzes, shakes or won't tilt
  • Calibration fails, or one camera's image stays tilted
  • It started after a crash or a hard knock in transport

The gimbal is a DJI repair job. DJI Care Refresh covers crash damage if you bought a plan in time.
