DJI Mini 3 gimbal motor overloaded or stuck: how to fix it

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

A stuck gimbal or "gimbal motor overloaded" on the DJI Mini 3 usually means something stopped the camera from moving during its startup check: the gimbal protector, uneven ground, grass or a knock. Remove the protector, set the drone on a flat, hard surface and restart it. If the camera then moves but sits crooked, run gimbal calibration in DJI Fly.

Mini 3 gimbal stuck: what to do
Most Mini 3 gimbal overload warnings come from something blocking the camera at startup. The timing of the error points to the fix.

Why the Mini 3 gimbal overloads

The Mini 3 has a 3-axis gimbal that tilts from -90° to +60° and rolls 90° for True Vertical Shooting. Its motors are small and tuned for the camera's exact weight. DJI's manual says a gimbal motor may enter protection mode when:

  • The aircraft is on uneven ground and the gimbal is impacted
  • The gimbal takes an excessive external force, such as in a collision

DJI also says not to tap or knock the gimbal once the drone is on, not to add any extra payload to it, and to take off from open, flat ground.

Fixes to try, in order

  1. Remove the gimbal protector before powering on. Put it back on when the drone is stored. DJI suggests rotating the camera level first.
  2. Restart on a flat, hard surface. A table beats grass or a backpack. Keep your hands off while the camera moves through its startup check.
  3. Look for grit. DJI warns against sand and dust in the gimbal motors. With the drone off, gently move the camera. Rough or gritty movement means debris. Use a hand blower, not compressed air at close range.
  4. Remove stickers and add-ons. Anything stuck to the camera adds load. DJI says extra payload can cause abnormal behavior or permanent motor damage.
  5. Dry it out. Flying through fog or cloud can wet the gimbal and cause a temporary failure that clears once it's dry.
  6. Update firmware for the aircraft and controller in DJI Fly.
  7. Calibrate. In DJI Fly camera view, open settings and go to Control. Gimbal Settings includes gimbal calibration and recentering. Keep the drone level and still while it runs. More detail is in Mini 3 horizon not level.

Gimbal shaking or twitching

If the gimbal works but footage shakes, that's a different problem. DJI notes that in strong wind the Mini 3 lifts some of its lateral flight limits to fight the wind, so the gimbal may vibrate. Minor tremor in Sport mode is also expected. See Mini 3 jello and vibration.

When it's damaged

Start a repair if:

  • The warning returns on flat ground with no protector or add-ons
  • The camera hangs crooked, buzzes or won't tilt
  • Calibration fails every time
  • It started after a crash or a hard knock in a bag

The gimbal is a DJI repair job. DJI Care Refresh covers crash damage if you have a plan. For this error on other models, read gimbal motor overloaded. More about the drone is in the Mini 3 guide.
