On-demand drone insurance lets you buy liability coverage for a single flight, a month or a year, usually from an app or website, and get a certificate of insurance for a client within minutes. SkyWatch sells hourly, monthly and annual drone plans in the US, Verifly is known for app-based coverage by the flight, and Moonrock is a UK-based specialist with hobby and commercial policies. Hourly coverage usually costs about $10 to $15 for $1 million in liability.

How on-demand coverage works
- Download the insurer's app or open its website.
- Enter where and when you'll fly, and how much liability you need. $1 million is the common client requirement.
- Add the client as an additional insured if they asked.
- Pay, and download the certificate of insurance.
Coverage applies only to the time and place you bought. Fly outside that window and you aren't covered.
The three names people search
SkyWatch. A US insurance agency selling drone liability by the hour, month or year. Its monthly and annual plans offer liability limits from $500,000 to $5 million, let you add clients as additional insureds at no extra charge, and include worldwide coverage for commercial use. Optional hull coverage covers your drones and equipment against physical damage, loss and theft, on the ground and in the air. SkyWatch says its products aren't available in New York and Kentucky.
Verifly. One of the first apps to sell drone liability by the flight, priced by location and time. Products and availability have changed over the years, so check the app for current coverage in your state before you rely on it.
Moonrock. A UK drone insurance specialist underwritten through Lloyd's of London. Its hobby policy lists third-party liability up to £1 million plus hull cover with accidental damage, theft and flyaways, and worldwide cover including the US and Canada. Commercial policies are written for the UK and international operators and are EC 785/2004 compliant for Europe. It's a common pick for pilots who travel to the UK or Europe.

What on-demand plans usually don't cover
- Your own drone, unless you add hull coverage. Liability only pays for harm to others.
- Flights outside the purchased time or area.
- Illegal flights, such as flying in controlled airspace without authorization or ignoring a TFR. Insurers generally expect you to follow FAA rules.
- Some activities like spraying or flights over crowds may need a specialist policy.

Do you need it at all?
The FAA doesn't require insurance for recreational or Part 107 flights. Clients, venues and property managers often do, and some countries, including several in Europe, require it by law. See drone insurance for Europe and our Part 107 guide.
