DJI rates the Air 3's maximum wind resistance at 12 m/s, which is about 27 mph or 43 km/h. That's the most it can handle, not a comfortable flying condition. In practice, fly freely below about 15 mph, take care between 15 and 25 mph, and stay on the ground when gusts approach 27 mph. Remember the wind at 300 to 400 ft is usually stronger than where you're standing.

What 12 m/s means
| Unit | Air 3 max wind |
|---|---|
| Meters per second | 12 m/s |
| Miles per hour | about 27 mph |
| Kilometers per hour | about 43 km/h |
| Knots | about 23 kt |
DJI's own manual also tells pilots not to fly in winds above 12 m/s, or in snow, rain, fog, hail or thunderstorms.
Why the rating isn't the whole story
- Gusts. A 15 mph average with 30 mph gusts is too much. Check gust forecasts, not just the average.
- Altitude. Wind speeds up with height. A calm parking lot can mean 25 mph at 400 ft.
- Headwind home. In Normal mode the Air 3 flies at up to 12 m/s, the same as its wind rating. Flying back into a strong headwind can take almost all the drone's speed, and you may need Sport mode just to make progress, with obstacle sensing off.
- Battery. Holding position in wind drains the battery much faster. DJI also notes that cold batteries reduce wind resistance.
How to fly an Air 3 in wind
- Check the forecast for wind and gusts at altitude. Apps like UAV Forecast help.
- Fly upwind first, so the return leg has the wind behind you.
- Stay closer and lower than usual, within legal limits.
- Watch the warnings. DJI Fly shows a strong-wind warning. Take it seriously and head home.
- Land with a bigger reserve, 25 to 30% instead of the usual 15 to 20%.
- Use Sport mode to get home if you're not gaining ground. Stay clear of obstacles while you do.
- Take off and land out of the wind if you can, sheltered by a building or hill.
Footage in wind
The three-axis gimbal keeps footage steady in moderate wind, but strong gusts can still show as small jolts. Wide shots hide it better than the 70 mm camera. Shoot at a higher shutter speed or slow your moves on gusty days.
How it compares
The Air 3S has the same 12 m/s rating. Sub-250 g Minis are lighter and generally have a lower rating, so the Air series is the better choice for coasts and open country. See best drone for windy conditions and our general guide to flying a drone in wind.
Fly the DJI Air 3 within its limits and it handles typical breezy days well. Read Air 3 battery life to plan your reserve.
