How far can the DJI Air 3S fly? Range and transmission explained

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The DJI Air 3S has a maximum video transmission range of 20 km (12.4 miles) under FCC rules, which apply in the US, with no obstructions or interference. In Europe (CE) it's 10 km (6.2 mi). Its maximum flight distance on one battery is 32 km (19.9 mi), measured out and not back. In the US you must keep the drone within your own visual line of sight, so real flights are usually well under a mile.

DJI Air 3S range in km
DJI's published Air 3S figures. Transmission ranges are best cases for each setting; urban, suburban and behind-trees bars show the top of DJI's range.

The range numbers, in km and miles

Measure km miles
Video range, FCC (US) 20 12.4
Video range, CE/SRRC/MIC 10 6.2
Max flight distance (one battery) 32 19.9
Urban, strong interference (FCC) 1.5 to 4 0.9 to 2.5
Suburban, medium interference (FCC) 4 to 10 2.5 to 6.2
Suburb or seaside, low interference (FCC) 10 to 20 6.2 to 12.4
Behind buildings 0 to 0.5 0 to 0.3
Behind trees 0.5 to 3 0.3 to 1.9

The transmission figures are DJI's reference values for its O4 link, not guarantees. The flight distance figure comes from a wind-tunnel test at a steady 48.6 km/h until the battery ran flat, so it isn't a round-trip range.

Top speed in km/h

People searching range often ask about speed too. The Air 3S tops out at 21 m/s in calm air, which is 75.6 km/h or about 47 mph, in Sport mode. With a 6 m/s tailwind DJI measured 27 m/s (97.2 km/h). In the EU it's limited to 19 m/s (68.4 km/h). See Air 3S top speed.

What limits range in practice

  • Obstructions. Buildings, hills and trees block the signal. Fly high enough to keep a clear path.
  • Interference. Cities are full of Wi-Fi and radio noise on the same 2.4 and 5.8 GHz bands.
  • Antenna position. DJI says to point the controller antennas toward the aircraft. The flat faces should face the drone, not the tips.
  • Your phone. On the RC-N3, a slow or overheating phone can cause video lag. A DJI RC 2 avoids that.
  • Battery and wind. Distance out is easy; coming back into a headwind is what drains the battery.

The legal limit: line of sight

US rules require you, or a visual observer next to you, to see the drone with your own eyes throughout the flight. For a drone the size of the Air 3S that usually means a few hundred yards to under a mile, depending on light and background. Flying beyond line of sight needs an FAA waiver. See can you fly a drone beyond line of sight.

So why does range matter? A stronger link means a cleaner, steadier 1080p feed, fewer dropouts behind trees, and a better chance of keeping control in a noisy city.

If you lose signal

Set Signal Lost Action to RTH and your RTH altitude above the tallest obstacles before every flight. The Air 3S returns automatically if the link drops. See Air 3S home point.

Range vs other DJI drones

The Air 3S matches the Air 3's 20 km FCC rating. For general comparisons, see how far can a drone fly.
