You don't need a pilot license to fly the DJI Air 3S for fun, but you do need to register it with the FAA, because at 724 g it's well over the 250 g limit. Recreational pilots also need the free TRUST certificate. If you fly for any business purpose, you need a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.

Recreational flying
- Register the drone at FAADroneZone: $5, valid 3 years. Mark the registration number on the outside of the drone. See FAA registration.
- Pass the TRUST test. It's free, online, and you can't fail it. Carry your certificate when you fly. See TRUST test.
- Follow the rules: at or below 400 ft in uncontrolled airspace, LAANC or DroneZone authorization in controlled airspace, visual line of sight, and no flying over people or moving vehicles. Follow a community-based organization's safety guidelines.
Commercial flying (Part 107)
Any flight that supports a business counts: client shoots, real estate, inspections, or content you're paid for.
- Earn the Remote Pilot Certificate by passing the FAA knowledge test at an approved testing center. You must be at least 16. Keep it current with free online recurrent training every 24 months. See Part 107.
- Register the Air 3S under Part 107 ($5, 3 years).
- Fly by Part 107 rules: 400 ft AGL (or within 400 ft of a structure), max 100 mph, visual line of sight, give way to crewed aircraft. Night flights need current training and anti-collision lighting visible for 3 statute miles.
Remote ID
The Air 3S has Standard Remote ID built in. It broadcasts automatically, so you don't need a module. Add its serial number to your FAADroneZone registration. See Air 3S Remote ID and Remote ID explained.
Where you can fly
- Controlled airspace near airports: get LAANC authorization first. See LAANC explained.
- National parks: drones are banned without a special permit.
- State parks and local rules: vary by state. See drone laws by state.
- Wildfires and TFRs: never fly near a wildfire. Check B4UFLY or Aloft before every flight.
Is there a way to avoid registration?
Not with an Air 3S. If you want a drone that doesn't need registration for recreational use, choose a sub-250 g model like the Mini 4 Pro. See drones under 250 g rules.
Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
