For most police, fire and search and rescue teams, the best drone is the DJI Matrice 4T: a folding drone with a 640 × 512 thermal camera, wide and two telephoto cameras, a laser rangefinder and 49 minutes of rated flight. Choose the Matrice 30T if you fly in rain (IP55), the Matrice 350 RTK for heavy payloads like spotlights, speakers and the Zenmuse H30T, and a DJI Dock 3 for automated response.

DJI Matrice 4T: best overall
- Thermal that measures. Radiometric 640 × 512 thermal, with spot and area temperature measurement and a high-gain range of -4° to 302° F.
- See and confirm. 48 MP wide, 70 mm and 168 mm cameras, up to 112× hybrid zoom, to identify what the thermal camera finds.
- Locate. A laser rangefinder gives target coordinates to send to ground crews.
- Night help. An NIR auxiliary light and night scene modes for the visible cameras.
- Portable. 1.22 kg and folding, so it rides in a patrol car.
Limit: no IP rating, so it's not for rain.
DJI Matrice 30T: best in bad weather
IP55 means it resists rain and water jets. It packs wide, zoom, 640 thermal and a rangefinder into one integrated payload, and it deploys quickly from its case. It's heavier and shorter-flying than the 4T, but it keeps working when weather grounds smaller drones.
DJI Matrice 350 RTK: best for payloads
A larger IP55 platform for teams that need more than one tool in the air:
- Zenmuse H30T: 1280 × 1024 thermal, 34× hybrid optical zoom, rangefinder to 3,000 m
- Zenmuse S1 spotlight: lights up to 500 m away in DJI's lab test
- Zenmuse V1 speaker: broadcast up to 500 m on the 350 RTK
DJI Dock 3: drone as first responder
A dock stores, charges and launches a Matrice 4TD on demand, managed in DJI FlightHub 2. It can be fixed on a roof or mounted on a vehicle. Dock flights are usually beyond visual line of sight, which needs FAA waivers or authorizations; the Part 108 BVLOS rule was still not final in early October 2026.
FAA paths for agencies
- Part 107, with certificated pilots and registered drones. Night and some over-people operations are allowed without a waiver if you meet the rules.
- Public aircraft operations under an FAA Certificate of Waiver or Authorization (COA), where the agency self-certifies pilots under the COA's conditions.

2026 buying notes
- Procurement rules. Some agencies can't buy DJI because of federal grant conditions or state laws. Tell us the end user when you request a quote.
- Tariffs. Since September 3, 2026, imported thermal drones carry a 100% Section 232 tariff, which affects pricing.
- FCC proposal. In July 2026 the FCC proposed stopping further import and sale of foreign thermal, LiDAR and dock drones. It wasn't adopted as of October 2026, and wouldn't affect drones already owned.
What to check before you buy
- Who will fly, under which FAA path, and how often
- Day, night or both, and typical weather
- Thermal resolution and whether you need radiometric data
- Batteries: plan at least three per aircraft for long incidents
- Training, evidence handling and privacy policy
