How much does a thermal drone cost? The most affordable options worth buying

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Real thermal drones with radiometric 640 x 512 cameras are enterprise tools sold by quote, and they cost far more than consumer camera drones. The most affordable DJI thermal option is usually the compact Mavic 3T, followed by the Matrice 4T, which adds a laser rangefinder and longer zoom. The Matrice 30T costs more but is weather-sealed (IP55). Cheap "thermal" drones on marketplaces usually have very low-resolution sensors that won't find a person or a hot spot reliably.

Specs from DJI Enterprise. All three are sold by quote; packages vary with batteries, controller, accessories and support.

What drives the price

  • Thermal sensor resolution. 640 x 512 is the professional standard. Low-cost cores (160 x 120 or 256 x 192) show heat blobs but little detail.
  • Radiometric measurement. Reading actual temperatures, not just a heat picture, is essential for inspection.
  • Zoom and visible cameras. Long zoom lets you inspect from a safe distance.
  • Rangefinder and accessories. Spotlights and speakers for search and rescue.
  • Weather sealing and batteries. Extra batteries and charging cases add up.
  • Software and support. Mission planning, cloud tools, training and repair plans.

The options

DJI Mavic 3T (Mavic 3 Enterprise series). A folding drone with a 640 x 512 thermal camera, a 48 MP wide camera and a tele with up to 56x hybrid zoom, and 45 minutes of rated flight. Good for roof and solar inspection, search and rescue and wildlife surveys where portability matters.

DJI Matrice 4T. The newer compact flagship: 640 x 512 thermal (with a 1280 x 1024 super-resolution mode), wide, 70 mm and 168 mm cameras with 112x hybrid zoom, a laser rangefinder, NIR auxiliary light and 49 minutes of rated flight. The best all-round thermal drone for public safety.

DJI Matrice 30T. Larger and IP55-rated for rain and dust, with 640 x 512 thermal (1280 x 1024 super-resolution), a zoom camera and laser rangefinder, and 41 minutes of rated flight. Better for crews that fly in bad weather.

For heavier platforms, thermal payloads like the Zenmuse H30T mount on the Matrice 350 RTK.

Cheaper routes

  • Used or refurbished thermal drones. They can cut cost, but check flight hours, batteries and whether accounts and licenses transfer. See used and refurbished DJI drones.
  • Consumer drones don't have thermal. No Mini, Air, Mavic consumer model or Avata has a thermal camera. Night modes improve visible-light video; they don't show heat.

US price factors in 2026

  • Tariffs. Since September 3, 2026, imported drones carry a Section 232 tariff, with a higher rate for thermal drones than standard camera drones.
  • FCC proposal. In July 2026 the FCC proposed restricting further import and sale of foreign drones with thermal imaging and other "military-grade" features. It's a proposal, not a rule, and it wouldn't affect drones already owned. See is DJI banned in the US.

Before you buy

Thermal work is usually commercial, so plan for Part 107, registration and, for night flights, anti-collision lighting. Compare options in best thermal drone, or read find a lost pet with a thermal drone.
