The best drone that follows you depends on how fast you move and where. For walking, hiking and selfie clips, the DJI Neo ($186) launches from your palm and follows you with no controller. For vlogging and casual hikes, the DJI Flip ($483) adds a bigger sensor and longer flights. For cycling, mountain biking and running on trails with trees, choose the Mini 4 Pro ($835) or Mini 5 Pro ($835), which track with omnidirectional obstacle sensing.

How follow-me works on DJI drones
DJI drones use the camera to lock onto a subject, then fly to keep it in frame. Three things matter:
- Tracking speed: if you move faster than the drone's limit, it falls behind.
- Obstacle sensing: a drone that can't see branches will fly into them while it watches you.
- Flight time: a long ride needs a long battery.
DJI Neo: easiest hands-free follow
The Neo takes off from your hand and records itself following, circling or flying away from you. No controller needed, and full prop guards make it safe near people. DJI's manual puts its max speed in Follow mode at 8 m/s (about 18 mph), and notes that the Neo doesn't support obstacle sensing, so use it in open spaces. Rated flight time is 18 minutes.
DJI Flip: the vlogger's choice
The Flip has a 1/1.3-inch, 48 MP sensor, 4K/60fps HDR video, built-in guards and 31 minutes of rated flight. DJI rates its tracking speed at up to 12 m/s (about 27 mph). Its obstacle sensing faces forward only, so be careful on narrow, wooded trails.
DJI Mini 4 Pro and Mini 5 Pro: best for sports
Both have ActiveTrack and omnidirectional obstacle sensing, so they can follow you through more complex terrain.
- Mini 4 Pro: 34 minutes rated, 4K/60 HDR, sold officially in the US with Care Refresh.
- Mini 5 Pro: 1-inch sensor, forward LiDAR for better sensing in low light, 36 minutes rated, and tracking at up to 15 m/s (about 34 mph). DJI says its ActiveTrack can detect sports scenarios and switch to a Cycling mode. Limited US stock; ask us about US Care Refresh for it.
By activity
| Activity | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Walking, travel selfies | Neo | Palm launch, tiny, cheap |
| Running on open roads or tracks | Flip or Mini 4 Pro | Enough speed and flight time |
| Road cycling | Mini 5 Pro | Highest tracking speed |
| Mountain biking in trees | Mini 4 Pro or Mini 5 Pro | Omnidirectional sensing |
| Hiking and backpacking | Flip or Mini 5 Pro | Light, long flights |
Safety and rules
- No drone avoids everything. Thin branches, wires and fast changes of direction can still cause crashes. Track in open areas first.
- Keep the drone in visual line of sight, which is hard when you're riding. A friend acting as spotter helps.
- Don't fly over people or moving vehicles, and stay at or below 400 ft. Check no-fly zones before trail rides; many parks restrict drones.
- Recreational pilots need the TRUST test.
