Yes, many DJI drones can follow you. ActiveTrack (part of DJI's FocusTrack suite) is built into the Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Air 3S, Mavic 4 Pro and Flip, and the DJI Neo has its own Follow Me mode. The Mini 3 and Mini 2 SE don't have ActiveTrack. On drones that do, you drag a box around yourself in DJI Fly (or tap a recognized subject), choose ActiveTrack, and the drone follows while you film.

Which DJI drones have ActiveTrack?
| Model | Follow mode | What it tracks |
|---|---|---|
| Mini 4 Pro | FocusTrack: ActiveTrack, Spotlight, POI | People, vehicles, boats |
| Mini 5 Pro | FocusTrack ActiveTrack | Moving subjects; see DJI specs |
| Air 3S | FocusTrack ActiveTrack | People, vehicles, boats |
| Mavic 4 Pro | FocusTrack ActiveTrack | People, vehicles, boats |
| Flip | FocusTrack ActiveTrack | People only |
| Neo | Follow Me, DirectionTrack | People |
| Mini 3, Mini 2 SE | None | n/a |
Mini 3 Pro? It's a different drone from the Mini 3. The Mini 3 Pro has FocusTrack, so you start ActiveTrack the same way as on a Mini 4 Pro. The plain Mini 3 only has QuickShots like Dronie and Circle, which orbit or fly away from you but don't follow you as you move.
How to start ActiveTrack in DJI Fly
- Take off and hover in an open area with good light.
- Start recording. DJI says the drone doesn't record automatically in FocusTrack.
- Drag a box around the subject in the camera view, or turn on Subject Scanning and tap the subject.
- Pick ActiveTrack and a mode. On the Mini 4 Pro: Auto (people only; plans its own path), Manual (follow from one of eight directions) or Parallel (keeps the same compass direction).
- Keep a thumb near the Flight Pause button.
On the Mini 4 Pro, DJI lists a max tracking speed of 12 m/s (about 27 mph), and follow distances of 4 to 20 m for people. Tracking works within certain zoom limits: 3x in 4K, 4x in 1080p.
DJI Neo: Follow Me without a controller
The Neo follows you from behind in Follow Me mode, the default when you first power it on. Press the mode button to cycle modes, launch from your palm, and it records automatically. DJI's manual gives a top speed of 8 m/s in Follow Me, and warns that the Neo has no obstacle sensing, so use it in open spaces. If you move toward it, it hovers rather than backing up. DirectionTrack follows from the side or front after you unlock it in the app.
Gimbals with tracking
- Osmo Mobile 6: follows subjects with ActiveTrack through the DJI Mimo app. See the Osmo Mobile 6.
- RS 4 Mini: tracks with the RS Intelligent Tracking Module, sold separately. It tracks from 0.5 to 10 m and starts with the trigger or a hand gesture.
- Osmo Pocket 3: see Osmo Pocket 3 ActiveTrack.
Limits to know
- Light: tracking needs the vision sensors. DJI warns about very dark (under 5 lux on the Mavic 4 Pro) or very bright scenes.
- Speed: DJI recommends subjects under 12 m/s on the Mavic 4 Pro.
- Obstacles: drones avoid what they can see, not thin branches or wires. DJI says not to track in areas with fine objects, water or glass.
- Sport mode turns obstacle avoidance off.
- Lost subject: if you vanish behind trees, the drone stops following.
The rules still apply
ActiveTrack doesn't change FAA rules. Keep the drone in your own visual line of sight (hard when you're the subject, so use a visual observer), stay at or below 400 ft, and don't fly over other people or moving vehicles. Tracking a friend's car on a public road can break those rules quickly. Paid work needs Part 107.
