Can a drone fly to space (or the top of Everest)?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

No. A drone can't fly to space or to the Moon. Propellers work by pushing air down, and the air gets thinner the higher you go. Long before the edge of space, about 100 km (62 miles) up, there isn't enough air to hold a drone up. On the Moon there's no air at all, so a propeller would just spin.

How high is high?
The commonly used edge of space is 100 km up. DJI rates its consumer drones for takeoff no higher than 2 to 6 km above sea level, and US hobby flights stop at 400 ft.

Why drones need air

A quadcopter makes lift by spinning propellers that push air downward. Less air means less lift, so the motors spin faster, drain the battery faster and eventually can't keep the drone up. Cold at altitude also cuts battery capacity. Rockets work in space because they carry their own propellant and push against it, not against air.

How high DJI drones can take off

DJI lists a maximum takeoff altitude for each model. That's the height above sea level where the drone can still launch and fly, not how high it can climb from where you stand.

Drone Max takeoff altitude
DJI Air 3S 6,000 m
DJI Mini 5 Pro 6,000 m (standard battery)
DJI Mini 4 Pro 4,000 m (standard battery)
DJI Flip 3,000 m
DJI Neo 2,000 m

In the US, height above the ground is limited by law, not by the drone. Recreational and Part 107 pilots must stay at or below 400 ft above ground level (Part 107 allows more within 400 ft of a structure). DJI Fly also has a max altitude setting, measured from the takeoff point. See DJI altitude warnings and Part 107.

What about Everest?

The summit of Mount Everest is 8,849 m, well above any consumer DJI drone's rated takeoff altitude. Even Base Camp, around 5,364 m, is above the Mini 4 Pro's limit. Heavy-lift drones have flown on Everest with Nepali approval: in 2024 a DJI FlyCart 30 carried supplies and waste between Base Camp and Camp 1. Flying anywhere in the Everest region also needs official permission. Details in can you fly a drone at Mount Everest.

Has a drone ever flown on another planet?

Yes. NASA's Ingenuity helicopter flew on Mars, making the first powered, controlled flight on another planet in April 2021. Mars has air, but it's very thin, about 1% as dense as Earth's at sea level, so Ingenuity used large, very fast-spinning rotors on a very light body. It flew 72 times before its mission ended in January 2024. NASA's planned Dragonfly rotorcraft is headed for Saturn's moon Titan, which has a thick atmosphere. Neither could fly in space itself or on the Moon.

Can you send a drone up on a balloon?

People launch cameras to the stratosphere on weather balloons. That's a balloon flight, not a drone flight, and it has its own FAA rules for unmanned free balloons. A consumer drone isn't designed to survive the cold or the thin air up there.

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
