Best long-range drones (and how far they really fly)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The longest-range consumer drone DJI makes is the Mavic 4 Pro, rated at 30 km (18.6 mi) of video transmission under FCC conditions. The Air 3S, Mini 4 Pro and Mini 5 Pro are each rated at 20 km, and the enterprise Matrice 4T at 25 km. Those are lab-style maximums in open, interference-free conditions. Real flights in towns get a few kilometers, and US rules require you to keep the drone in visual line of sight anyway.

How far they fly in real life

DJI publishes typical ranges for different environments. For the Mavic 4 Pro, that's about 1.5 to 6 km with strong interference (cities) and 6 to 15 km with medium interference (suburbs). The 20 km drones are rated about 1.5 to 4 km in cities and 4 to 10 km in suburbs. Trees, buildings and hills cut range further, because the signal needs a clear path.

What helps:

  • Point the controller antennas correctly and keep a clear line to the drone.
  • Fly from high, open ground.
  • Avoid crowded Wi-Fi areas and power lines.
  • Use a controller with stronger antennas, like the DJI RC 2 or RC Pro 2, where supported.

Range vs the law

In the US, recreational pilots and Part 107 pilots must keep the drone within visual line of sight, which for most small drones is well under 1 km. Flying farther needs a Part 107 waiver; the Part 108 BVLOS rule wasn't final as of early October 2026. See can you fly a drone beyond line of sight.

So why buy long range? A strong link is a more reliable link. It means fewer dropouts behind trees or near interference, a clearer live view and a safer return-to-home.

Long-range FPV

Long-range FPV pilots often use custom builds with dedicated radio links. DJI's O4 system on the Avata 2 is rated at 13 km. The same line-of-sight rules apply, and FPV flying needs a visual observer next to you.

Thermal at long range

For search and rescue or inspection, the Matrice 4T combines a 25 km rated link with a thermal camera, 112x hybrid zoom and a laser rangefinder that measures to 1,800 m. See cheapest thermal drone.

Our pick

For most people the Mini 4 Pro or Air 3S is the sweet spot: a 20 km rated link, plenty of reliability for legal flights, and full US support. Choose the Mavic 4 Pro if you want the strongest link and best camera.
