DJI activation failed, login or server error: how to fix it

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

A DJI "activation failed" or "server error" message means DJI Fly couldn't complete a check with DJI's servers, so the drone, controller or account can't be activated or signed in. Make sure the phone or DJI RC 2 has a working internet connection, turn off any VPN, set the date and time to automatic, update DJI Fly, and try again. DJI's own advice for a failed RC 2 activation is to check the connection, retry, and contact DJI Support if it keeps failing.

Fix a DJI activation error
DJI's RC 2 manual says to check the internet connection if activation fails, try again, and contact DJI Support if it persists. These steps cover the usual causes.

What the error numbers mean

DJI shows numbers such as 1112 or 1581 with some login, activation and server errors. DJI doesn't publish a public list of what each app error number means, so we won't guess. The number is useful when you contact DJI support, so write it down or take a screenshot. The checks below fix most activation and login failures regardless of the number.

Fixes, in order

  1. Get a solid connection. Activation needs internet. With an RC-N controller, that's your phone. With a DJI RC 2, join Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot from Quick Settings (slide down twice from the top). If you're flying a Neo or Flip from the phone, turn on mobile data, because the phone's Wi-Fi is busy with the drone.
  2. Turn off VPNs, private relays and ad blockers. They can block or reroute the connection to DJI's servers.
  3. Set date and time to automatic. A wrong clock breaks secure connections.
  4. Update DJI Fly and restart the app, the phone, the controller and the drone.
  5. Try another network. Public, hotel, school and office Wi-Fi often block app logins. A phone hotspot is a good test.
  6. Log out and back in. If the password fails or the account is locked, reset it: see DJI account login and password.
  7. Allow permissions. DJI Fly needs network and location access on the phone.
  8. Try again later. If DJI's servers are busy or down, waiting an hour often fixes it.

Activation keeps failing on one device

  • Controller not linked. The drone and controller should be linked before activation and updates. See DJI drone not connecting to controller.
  • Firmware update needed. If DJI Fly prompts for an update, finish it first.
  • Bound to another account. A used drone may still be bound to the previous owner's DJI account. Ask the seller to unbind it, or contact DJI with proof of purchase. See DJI not using bound device.

"SDK error" in third-party apps

Third-party flight apps built on DJI's SDK (for mapping or waypoint missions) also need to register with DJI's servers, usually on first launch with internet. Connect to the internet, update the app, and check the app supports your drone. Many newer consumer drones aren't supported by every third-party app; check the app maker's compatibility list.

Why login matters for flying

DJI's manuals say flight is limited to 30 m (98 ft) height and 50 m (164 ft) range when the drone isn't connected or logged into the app. Fixing login removes that cap. See account not logged in and check network.

When to contact DJI

If activation fails on two different networks with the latest app, contact DJI support with the error number, app version, device serial number and a screenshot. If you bought from us, contact us and we'll help you open the case. For other error messages, see DJI error codes explained.
