An ESC error on a DJI drone means the flight controller has lost contact with, or found a fault in, the electronic speed controller that drives the motors. If one propeller won't spin, the cause is usually a wrongly fitted propeller, debris inside the motor, or a failed motor or ESC. Restart with the battery fully seated, check the propellers, and spin each motor by hand. If a motor is rough or the error keeps returning, the drone needs a repair.

What is a drone ESC?
ESC stands for electronic speed controller. It takes power from the battery and switches current to each brushless motor many times per second, so the motor turns at exactly the speed the flight controller asks for. That's how a quadcopter climbs, turns and holds position: by changing the speed of each motor separately.
On DJI's consumer drones the ESCs are built into a board inside the body, not separate parts you can swap. The soft chirp at power-on is the ESCs starting up; DJI's manuals ask you to check that they sound normal. Large drones such as the Agras spray drones use the same principle with much bigger motors, and their ESC faults are a dealer or DJI service job.
Why one propeller won't spin
DJI's help center lists three causes for a "starting motor failed" warning:
- Propellers installed wrong. DJI says a drone with incorrectly mounted propellers can't take off. Marked props go on marked motors. Replace any damaged blade.
- Debris in the motor. Sand, grass or dust can jam it. DJI says to clean the motor and then, with the drone off, rotate it by hand to check it turns smoothly.
- A faulty motor. If the motor won't turn smoothly after cleaning, DJI says to send the drone in.
Fixes to try, in order
- Restart cleanly. Remove the battery, check the contacts, and reinsert it until it clicks.
- Inspect the propellers for chips, cracks and correct placement. See how to change DJI propellers.
- Spin each motor by hand with the drone off. Grinding, tight spots or a wobbling bell means damage. Blow out grit with a hand blower.
- Dry it if it got wet, and don't keep powering it on until it has dried out.
- Update firmware in DJI Fly, or refresh it with DJI Assistant 2 on a computer if the app update fails.
- Watch the shutdown. DJI treats a gap of more than 2 seconds between one motor stopping and its propeller stopping as a fault worth checking.
DJI Avata and FPV drones
FPV drones crash more, and their ducted props pick up debris. After a crash, check the ducts for cracks that rub a prop, and clear grass from every motor before arming again. The Avata 2 ESC error page covers that model.
Model guides
We have step-by-step ESC pages for each current model, including the Mini 3 and Mini 4 Pro. The fixes are the same; the propeller fitting differs by model.
When it needs repair
Stop flying and start a repair if the ESC error survives a restart, cleaning and a firmware update, if a motor grinds or runs much hotter than the others, or if it started after a crash or water landing. Motor and ESC replacements are done by DJI. Crash and water damage is covered by DJI Care Refresh if you have a plan.
