An ESC error on the DJI Mini 3 means the flight controller has found a fault in, or lost contact with, the electronic speed controllers that drive the four motors. A one-off glitch can clear with a restart. If the error comes back, treat it as a hardware fault and don't fly until it's fixed.

What the ESC is
ESC stands for electronic speed controller. It takes power from the battery and drives each motor at the speed the flight controller asks for. On the Mini 3 the ESC circuitry sits on a board inside the body. It isn't a user part, and people searching for a "Mini 3 ESC board" are usually looking at a repair. DJI's manual asks you to make sure the ESCs sound normal at power-on: that's the soft chirp you hear at startup.
Not every ESC sound is a fault. If you use Find My Drone in DJI Fly, the Mini 3 deliberately beeps its ESCs and the status light blinks red slowly so you can locate it.
Common triggers for a real ESC error:
- Sand, grass or grit in a motor after a landing in dirt
- A bent motor shaft or damaged motor bell after a crash
- Moisture from rain, fog or a water landing
- A battery that isn't fully seated, or dirty contacts
- A firmware mismatch after an interrupted update
Fixes to try, in order
- Restart cleanly. Power off, remove the battery, check the contacts, and reinsert it until it clicks. If battery LEDs 3 and 4 blink together without a button press, DJI says the battery isn't seated properly.
- Check every motor. With the drone off, spin each motor slowly by hand. It should turn smoothly with no grinding or tight spots. Blow out grit with a hand blower.
- Inspect the propellers. The Mini 3's props are screwed on. Replace any chipped or bent blade along with its screws, and put marked props on marked motors, as DJI instructs. See Mini 3 propellers.
- Let it dry. If it got wet, stop powering it on. Read what to do when a drone gets wet.
- Update firmware. Update the aircraft and controller in DJI Fly. DJI says updates can fail if either device is below 20% battery or the network drops, so charge first.
- Note when it happened. If the error appeared in flight, DJI support can read the flight record.
When it needs repair
Send it in if:
- The ESC error returns after a restart, cleaning and a firmware update
- One motor won't spin, stutters or gets much hotter than the others
- The error started after a crash or water exposure
- The motors twitch or make unusual sounds at power-on
The fix is usually a replacement motor or internal board, done by DJI. Crash and water damage is covered by DJI Care Refresh if you have a plan. Our repair page explains how we open the case with DJI for you.
