DJI RS Intelligent Tracking Module: setup and compatibility

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The DJI RS Intelligent Tracking Module is a small magnetic camera that clips onto a DJI RS gimbal and keeps one person in frame automatically, from 0.5 to 10 m away. It works with the RS 4 Mini (mounts directly), the RS 4 and RS 4 Pro (with the included adapter mount) and the RS 5. Start and stop tracking with a press of the trigger or an open-palm gesture. It tracks in PF and PTF modes only, not FPV.

RS Intelligent Tracking Module
From DJI's RS 4 Mini specs, manual and FAQ. Gesture control works best with the subject 1 to 3 m from the module.

Compatibility

Gimbal How it mounts Notes
DJI RS 4 Mini Magnetic, straight onto the tilt axis Uses the gimbal's pogo pins
DJI RS 4 Included adapter mount Uses the RSS port, so no camera control cable at the same time
DJI RS 4 Pro Included adapter mount Same RSS port limit
DJI RS 5 Listed as compatible

It doesn't need the camera to be connected: the module has its own lens and tells the gimbal where to point.

How to install it (RS 4 Mini)

  1. Lock the gimbal's axes first, as DJI recommends.
  2. Press the module's latches and set it onto the tilt axis; the magnets hold it.
  3. Power on. If the status light doesn't come on, reseat it until the magnets click in place.
  4. Swipe right on the touchscreen to open ActiveTrack settings.

On the RS 4 and RS 4 Pro, attach the adapter mount first, then the module.

Settings

  • Composition: Center Tracking Subject moves the person to the middle of the frame when tracking starts; Keep Current Framing holds your existing composition.
  • ActiveTrack Speed: Slow for smooth tracking and livestreams, Medium for parallel tracking, Fast for close orbits and high-motion scenes.
  • Gestures: can be turned off in the menu.

Controls

Action Trigger / joystick Gesture
Start or stop tracking Press trigger once Open palm (either hand)
Stop and recenter Press trigger twice
Adjust framing Joystick while tracking Framing gesture: light turns yellow, move, gesture again
Start/stop recording or photo V sign, after a 3 s countdown

Gesture control works best with you 1 to 3 m from the module. The ring light shows status: solid green tracking, blinking green subject temporarily lost, solid red off or lost, yellow adjusting framing or counting down.

Recording by gesture needs the gimbal connected to the camera (Bluetooth or cable) so it can trigger it. On the RS 4 and RS 4 Pro, that means Bluetooth, since the module occupies the RSS cable port.

Limits to know

  • People only, one at a time; it favors the person closest and most central.
  • Light: needs more than 20 lux. DJI advises against backlit and low-light scenes.
  • Crowds: DJI recommends three people or fewer in view.
  • Follow modes: PF and PTF only. Not in FPV.
  • Centering isn't perfect with every camera and lens; nudge framing with the joystick.
  • Low angles and flashlight mode: keep the grip or briefcase handle pointing the same way as the lens, or the gimbal may sway.
  • Sleep: after 5 idle minutes the module sleeps; press the trigger to wake it.
  • Temperature: -10° to 45° C (14° to 113° F).

Firmware updates

The module updates by computer, not the Ronin app. Download the .bin from the RS 4 Mini downloads page, copy it to the module's root folder over USB-C, disconnect, then reconnect. The light alternates red and green, and turns solid red when finished. The USB-C port is only for updates.

Is it worth it?

Yes, if you shoot alone: talking heads, product demos, walk-and-talk vlogs or livestreams. At $94 it costs far less than a camera operator. If someone else always runs the gimbal, skip it.

Get the DJI RS Intelligent Tracking Module, or pair it with a DJI RS 4 Mini. More add-ons in RS 4 accessories.
