Drone mapping and survey pricing (cost per acre)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Drone mapping and survey work is priced per acre, per project or per day, and the price depends far more on required accuracy and deliverables than on flight time. There's no standard cost per acre: a quick orthomosaic of an open field is a different job from a survey-grade topographic map with ground control, contours and a surveyor's stamp. Build each quote from area, accuracy, deliverables and processing time.

Building a survey quote
Acreage sets the flight time, but accuracy and deliverables set the price. Ground control, processing and quality checks often take longer than flying.

The main pricing models

Model Best for
Per acre, with a minimum Open land, farms, repeat site maps
Per project Topographic surveys, as-builts, volume reports
Day rate plus processing Large or uncertain scopes, subcontract work
Recurring program Monthly construction or stockpile mapping

Per-acre prices usually fall as the area grows, because setup, travel and ground control are fixed costs. Always set a minimum charge.

What drives the cost

  • Accuracy. Relative accuracy is fine for visual maps and rough measurements. Survey-grade work needs RTK or PPK positioning, ground control points and checkpoints, and much more QA. See ground control points.
  • Ground sample distance (GSD). Finer detail means flying lower, more photos and longer processing.
  • Deliverables. Orthomosaic, digital surface or terrain model, contours, 3D mesh, point cloud, volume report, CAD linework.
  • Terrain and vegetation. Photogrammetry can't see the ground under dense trees. LiDAR, such as the Zenmuse L2, costs more but measures through gaps in the canopy.
  • Processing. Software subscriptions or cloud credits, computer time and the analyst's hours.
  • Licensing. Many states require a licensed land surveyor for work that establishes boundaries or is used for engineering design. Hiring or partnering with one adds cost.
  • Site logistics. Travel, access, airspace authorization, and safety orientation.

A simple quote method

  1. Estimate field time: setup, GCP layout, flights (your mission planner shows flight time for the area and GSD), and packing up.
  2. Estimate processing and QA hours, plus software or cloud costs.
  3. Multiply total hours by your hourly cost, which covers equipment replacement, insurance, software and your income.
  4. Add travel, GCP materials and any surveyor fees.
  5. Compare against what the client would pay for a conventional ground survey crew. See drone survey vs traditional survey.

Equipment cost matters

A survey drone like the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise with its RTK module (DJI rates RTK fix accuracy at 1 cm + 1 ppm horizontal, 1.5 cm + 1 ppm vertical) or a Matrice 4E costs more than a photo drone, and LiDAR payloads more still. Spread that cost across the jobs you expect to fly each year.

A note on "TDS rate"

If you searched "drone survey TDS rate", that's a question about India's tax deducted at source on contract or professional payments. The rate depends on how the work is classified; check with a chartered accountant or India's Income Tax Department.
