Starting a drone mapping or survey business

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

To start a drone mapping or survey business, get your FAA Part 107 certificate, buy an RTK mapping drone such as the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise, learn photogrammetry software, and decide how you'll handle licensed survey work, either by partnering with a licensed land surveyor or working toward a license yourself. Construction, aggregate, agriculture and engineering clients pay for accurate maps, volumes and models on a recurring basis.

Photogrammetry vs LiDAR
Most mapping businesses start with an RTK photogrammetry drone and add LiDAR when clients need ground models under vegetation.

Mapping vs surveying

Mapping (orthomosaics, 3D models, progress maps, stockpile volumes) doesn't usually require a surveying license. Surveying that establishes property boundaries or produces data for engineering design is a licensed profession in every state, and some states define it broadly enough to cover topographic work. Check your state's board of professional land surveyors before you sell anything called a "survey." Many drone mapping companies work alongside or under a licensed surveyor.

Equipment

  • DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise (3E): 4/3 20 MP camera with a mechanical shutter and an optional RTK module. A compact, affordable starting point.
  • DJI Matrice 4E: larger sensor set with telephotos, RTK support and Smart 3D Capture for faster modeling.
  • DJI Zenmuse L2 on a Matrice 350 RTK: LiDAR with up to 5 returns and a 4/3 RGB camera, rated by DJI at 4 cm vertical and 5 cm horizontal accuracy at 150 m. For corridors, forested land and detailed topography.
  • Base station or network RTK, GCP targets and a GNSS rover for ground control and checkpoints.
  • A powerful computer or cloud processing.

Software

You'll need flight planning (DJI Pilot 2 or similar), processing (DJI Terra or another photogrammetry package) and often GIS or CAD for deliverables. See best drone mapping software.

Deliverables clients buy

  • Orthomosaic maps
  • Digital surface and terrain models, contours
  • Point clouds and 3D meshes
  • Stockpile and cut/fill volume reports
  • Progress comparisons over time

Finding clients and tenders

  • Construction and earthwork contractors: monthly progress and volume mapping.
  • Quarries and aggregates: stockpile inventory.
  • Engineering and survey firms: subcontract data capture.
  • Agriculture and land: drainage, field and acreage maps.
  • Government tenders: cities, counties and DOTs post mapping bids on procurement portals. Read eligibility carefully; some exclude certain foreign drone brands, and federally funded projects face limits on DJI under the American Security Drone Act. See is DJI banned in the US.

Pricing

Price by acre, project or day based on accuracy, deliverables and processing time. See drone mapping and survey pricing.

Common mistakes

  • Promising survey-grade accuracy without checkpoints to prove it
  • Underestimating processing time
  • Ignoring state survey licensing rules
  • Flying too high for the required GSD
