Yes, in much of the forest. Ocala National Forest is run by the US Forest Service, which generally allows recreational drones under FAA rules. The exceptions are the forest's four designated wilderness areas, where drone takeoff and landing are prohibited, the restricted airspace over the Navy's Pinecastle Range inside the forest, and temporary flight restrictions for fires. Crowded springs and recreation areas call for extra care.

Where you can't fly
- Wilderness areas. Ocala has four: Alexander Springs, Billies Bay, Juniper Prairie and Little Lake George. Federal law bans landing aircraft in wilderness, and the Forest Service applies that to drones. See drones in wilderness areas.
- Pinecastle Range. The Navy's bombing range sits inside the forest under restricted airspace. You can't fly there when it's active, and LAANC doesn't cover restricted areas. Check its status in B4UFLY or Aloft.
- Fire TFRs. Ocala uses prescribed burns and has wildfires. Never fly near smoke or firefighting aircraft.
- Silver Springs State Park, on the forest's west side, is a Florida state park. Florida's park rule (F.A.C. 62D-2.014(15)) bars any aerial apparatus from taking off or landing in a state park, and the Florida State Parks FAQ says that includes drones.
Springs and recreation areas
Juniper Springs, Alexander Springs, Silver Glen Springs and Salt Springs are busy, especially in summer. Recreation areas can post their own rules, so look for signs and ask staff. Even where flying is allowed:
- Don't fly over swimmers, paddlers or picnic areas. Recreational pilots can't fly over people.
- Fly early, before crowds arrive.
- Keep your distance from manatees, which gather in the springs in cooler months, and from wildlife like black bears and nesting birds.
Airspace
Most of the forest is uncontrolled Class G airspace, but check every flight. Ocala International Airport and Leesburg International have controlled airspace nearby. Use LAANC if your spot is inside controlled airspace.
Florida law
Florida bans flying over critical infrastructure, K-12 schools and agricultural land, and protects privacy on private property. Hunting with a drone or harassing wildlife is illegal. Ocala is a popular hunting area, so stay clear of hunters during seasons. See Florida drone laws.
Before you fly
- Pass the free TRUST test.
- Register drones of 250 g or more and broadcast Remote ID.
- Check a forest map for wilderness boundaries and the bombing range.
- Stay at or below 400 ft, in sight.
Florida heat and humidity are hard on batteries, so keep them shaded and let them cool before charging. Over clear spring water, the 249 g DJI Mini 5 Pro captures color well and needs no recreational registration. For other forests, read can you fly a drone in a national forest.
Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
