Can you fly a drone in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Not in Rocky Mountain National Park. The park, which starts at the edge of Estes Park, bans drones like every National Park Service unit. That covers Trail Ridge Road, Bear Lake, Moraine Park, Longs Peak and every trailhead inside the boundary. Around town, Roosevelt National Forest land outside wilderness is often open to drones, and private land is possible with the owner's permission.

Drone rules around Estes Park
Rocky Mountain National Park bans drones. Roosevelt National Forest around Estes Park generally allows them outside wilderness, and Colorado state parks and wildlife areas don't.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Launching, landing or operating a drone in the park is prohibited without a special permit (36 CFR 1.5), and the park lists "Unmanned Aircraft Prohibited" on its laws and policies page. The park doesn't issue permits for recreational flying. A violation is a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $5,000 and up to six months in jail.

Elk, bighorn sheep and moose are a big reason for the rule, along with crowded trailheads and the park's rescue helicopter operations. The boundary is close to town on several sides, so check a map before you launch anywhere on the west side of Estes Park.

Roosevelt National Forest

Much of the land around Estes Park outside the national park is Roosevelt National Forest, part of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. On forest land:

  • Recreational drones are generally allowed under FAA rules.
  • Designated wilderness areas, such as Comanche Peak and Indian Peaks, are off-limits for drone takeoff and landing.
  • Fire restrictions and wildfire TFRs apply. Colorado's Front Range has seen large fires near Estes Park.

In town

Colorado doesn't stop towns from setting rules, and the Town of Estes Park and the local recreation district manage their own parks and Lake Estes trails. Ask before you launch from town land, and don't fly over crowds on Elkhorn Avenue or at events.

Elk. Elk wander through town, especially during the fall rut, when bulls are aggressive and crowds gather to watch. Harassing wildlife is illegal in Colorado, and a drone over a herd will draw attention from wildlife officers fast. Keep away.

Colorado state land

Colorado Parks and Wildlife bans drones in state parks and state wildlife areas, apart from designated model aircraft fields at Cherry Creek and Chatfield. See drone laws in Colorado.

The federal basics

  • Pass the free TRUST test and carry proof.
  • Register drones of 250 g or more and fly with Remote ID.
  • Stay at or below 400 ft above the ground. In the mountains that's measured from the terrain below the drone.

High-altitude flying tips

Estes Park sits around 7,500 ft, and nearby forest land climbs higher. Thin air cuts lift and battery life, and afternoon thunderstorms with lightning and gusts are common in summer. Fly in the morning, keep a bigger battery reserve, and keep spares warm in fall. For bigger peaks, read drones on Colorado 14ers.

Which drone for Estes Park

The DJI Mini 5 Pro and Mini 4 Pro weigh 249 g, so hobby flights need no FAA registration, and they pack easily for a forest hike. The DJI Neo is good for short follow shots on a trail outside the park. For the general rule, see can you fly a drone in a national park.
