Drone photogrammetry settings: overlap, GSD and flight height

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

For most drone mapping jobs, fly an automated grid at a constant height with about 75% front overlap and 60% side overlap, raised to 80 to 85% front and 70% side over trees, crops or uniform ground. Pick your height from the ground sampling distance (GSD) you need: a Mavic 3 Enterprise gives roughly 2.7 cm per pixel at 100 m. Use a fast enough shutter to avoid blur, and add RTK or ground control points if the map must match real-world coordinates.

Mavic 3E GSD by flight height
Approximate ground sampling distance for the Mavic 3 Enterprise's 4/3, 20 MP mapping camera, calculated from its sensor size, focal length and image width. Lower flights give finer detail.

What GSD means

Ground sampling distance is the width of ground one pixel covers. A 2 cm GSD means each pixel represents 2 cm on the ground. Smaller is sharper, but it needs lower flights and more photos.

GSD (cm/px) = sensor width (mm) × height (m) × 100 ÷ (focal length (mm) × image width (px))

For the Mavic 3 Enterprise (17.3 mm wide 4/3 sensor, about 12 mm real focal length, 5280 px wide), that works out to about 2.7 cm at 100 m. GSD scales directly with height, so half the height gives half the GSD. Most mapping apps calculate it for you once you choose the drone.

Choosing a flight height

Goal Typical GSD Notes
Site overview, progress photos 3 to 5 cm Fly higher, cover more area per battery
Construction and stockpiles 1.5 to 3 cm Good balance of detail and coverage
Fine detail, cracks, small objects Under 1.5 cm Low and slow; many more photos

In the US, Part 107 limits you to 400 ft (about 122 m) above ground unless you're within 400 ft of a structure. Terrain follow keeps GSD consistent on hilly sites.

Overlap settings

  • 75% front, 60% side: a common starting point for open, textured ground.
  • 80 to 85% front, 70% side: forests, crops, sand, snow and water edges, where matching points is harder.
  • Buildings and 3D models: add oblique passes with the camera tilted around 45 degrees, or a double grid flown in two directions.

DJI quotes its own Mavic 3E coverage figure (up to 2 km² per flight) at a 5 cm GSD with 80% front and 60% side overlap.

Grid patterns

  • Single grid: parallel lines. Best for flat 2D orthomosaics.
  • Double grid (crosshatch): two perpendicular grids. Better for elevation models and vertical surfaces.
  • Orbits: circles around a structure at several heights for 3D models of towers and buildings.

Camera settings

  • Mechanical shutter if you have one. Rolling-shutter cameras distort when the drone moves during the exposure. The Mavic 3E has a mechanical shutter and shoots every 0.7 seconds.
  • Shutter speed: keep motion blur under about half your GSD. At 10 m/s and 1/1000 s, the drone moves 1 cm during the exposure.
  • Focus: fixed at infinity, or locked before the mission.
  • ISO: as low as the light allows. Fly in even light, ideally overcast or midday, to avoid long shadows.

Accuracy: relative vs absolute

Relative accuracy is how well measurements inside the map agree with each other. Absolute accuracy is how well the map lines up with real coordinates. Standard GNSS can be off by a meter or more. RTK drones like the Mavic 3E (rated 1 cm + 1 ppm horizontal with an RTK fix) or ground control points bring this to centimeters. "Survey grade" claims should always be backed by checkpoints.

Can a Mini 4 Pro map?

The Mini 4 Pro can capture overlapping photos for small 3D models using waypoints in DJI Fly, but it has an electronic shutter and no RTK. It suits hobby models, not paid survey deliverables. See Mini 4 Pro mapping.
