Yes. The DJI Flip can fly without a remote controller in three ways: palm control using the mode button on the drone, Mobile App Control from DJI Fly on your phone over Wi-Fi, and voice commands in the app. The trade-off is a short leash: DJI limits these modes to 30 m (98 ft) high and 50 m (164 ft) away, Return to Home isn't supported, and DJI says not to fly over water. For longer flights you need an RC-N3, RC-N2 or RC 2.

Controller-free modes
| Mode | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Palm control | Pick a Smart Snap with the mode button, launch from your hand | Quick selfies, no phone needed in flight |
| Mobile App Control | DJI Fly over Wi-Fi, with on-screen sticks and Smart Snaps | Framing, settings, audio recording |
| Voice control | Spoken commands in DJI Fly, English or Mandarin | Hands-free while you're on camera |
DJI's FAQ says the app's virtual joysticks are for fine-tuning position or bringing the drone back, not a substitute for a real controller.
How to connect your phone
- Turn off any controller linked to the Flip.
- Power on the Flip and wait for the self-check.
- Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and location on your phone.
- In DJI Fly, tap Connection Guide at the bottom right, choose the Flip, then Connect via Mobile Device.
- Select the Flip. The first time, press and hold its power button to confirm.
Palm control also needs this one-time connection before it will work.
Limits without a controller
- 30 m high, 50 m away. Fixed; you can't change them in DJI Fly.
- No Return to Home. Keep it in sight and within a controlled area.
- No flying over water.
- Wi-Fi range. DJI rates the Wi-Fi link at about 50 m in open space. Interference in cities and your own body between phone and drone can cause lag or disconnects. Keep the phone facing the drone.
- Auto landing if the battery is critically low, positioning fails, or it detects a collision.
If the drone loses you in Follow, Spotlight or DirectionTrack, it hovers. Reconnect DJI Fly, stop the task, choose Manual Control, and land it with the on-screen sticks.
Is there a Flip kit without a controller?
Not from DJI's US store. Every kit there includes the RC-N3 or RC 2. See Flip drone only. If you buy the standard kit, the RC-N3 can stay home on days you only need palm shots.
When you'll want the controller
- Landscapes and travel shots beyond 50 m
- Return to Home for safety
- QuickShots, MasterShots, ActiveTrack and Hyperlapse from the full DJI Fly controls
- Windy days, when a controller gives better control

Rules still apply
Flying from your phone doesn't change FAA rules. For fun you need the free TRUST certificate; at under 250 g, no registration. See Flip license.
Start with palm and phone flights on the DJI Flip, and add the RC-N3 when you want range. Step-by-step palm launch: Flip gestures.
