Buying the DJI Flip drone only: what else you need

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

DJI's US store doesn't list a drone-only DJI Flip. Its kits are the Flip with the RC-N3, the Flip with the DJI RC 2, and the Fly More Combo with the RC 2. Drone-only units sold elsewhere may be split from kits or imported, so check what's included. A bare Flip can still fly: by palm or phone control within 30 m high and 50 m away, or with a DJI RC-N2, RC-N3 or RC 2 you already own. You'll also need at least one battery, a USB PD charger and a microSD card.

Do you need the full Flip kit?
DJI lists the RC 2, RC-N3 and RC-N2 as the Flip's compatible controllers. Without one, it flies only by palm, phone or voice, with no Return to Home.

What a Flip kit includes

Kit Controller Batteries Extras
Flip (RC-N3), $483 here RC-N3 1 Spare props, PD cable, phone cables, gimbal protector, screwdriver
Flip (RC 2), from DJI DJI RC 2 1 Spare props, PD cable, gimbal protector, screwdriver
Fly More Combo (RC 2), $857 here DJI RC 2 3 Charging hub, shoulder bag, 3 spare prop pairs

No kit includes a wall charger.

If you buy a bare Flip, check you also get

  1. A battery. The drone can't power on without one. Our Flip battery is $109.
  2. A USB PD charger. DJI recommends the DJI 30W USB-C Charger for charging in the drone, or the 65W Portable Charger for the hub.
  3. A microSD card. Internal storage is only 2 GB. See Flip SD card.
  4. Spare props and the screwdriver. Props screw on and need the small driver DJI includes in its kits.
  5. The gimbal protector for transport.
  6. Proof of purchase. Warranty and Care Refresh depend on it. Gray-market units may not get US service.

Flying without a controller

The Flip is unusual: it was designed to fly without a remote.

  • Palm control: pick a mode with the mode button, hold it to take off from your hand, and it films on its own.
  • Phone control: fly from DJI Fly over Wi-Fi.
  • Voice control through DJI Fly in English or Mandarin.

Limits: 30 m (98 ft) high, 50 m (164 ft) away, no Return to Home, and DJI says not to fly over water. The phone needs to connect to the Flip at least once before palm control works. See Flip phone only.

Using a controller you already have

DJI lists three: the RC 2, RC-N3 and RC-N2. Link it in DJI Fly under Control > Re-pair to Aircraft, then hold the Flip's power button for more than four seconds. The Flip doesn't work with DJI goggles, the RC Motion 3 or the FPV controllers. Details in Flip controllers.

Activation

A new Flip has to be activated in DJI Fly with an internet connection before full use. With the RC-N3, connect your phone to the controller and follow the prompts. With the RC 2, activate the controller first, then the drone.

Is drone-only worth it?

Only if you already own a compatible controller and batteries. Otherwise the RC-N3 kit costs little more than a bare drone plus a controller bought separately, and comes linked and ready. For full-day flying, the Fly More Combo is better value.

Kit contents are from DJI's US store listings and can change.

Shop the DJI Flip, or add an RC-N3 if you bought a bare drone.
