DJI Flip QuickShots, Smart Snaps and modes: full list and how to use them

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The DJI Flip has two sets of automated shots. Smart Snaps run from the mode button or the phone app without a controller: Follow, Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight, and a Custom slot for DirectionTrack, Helix, Boomerang or Dolly Zoom. With a remote controller you get QuickShots (including Boomerang and Asteroid), MasterShots, FocusTrack (Spotlight, POI, ActiveTrack) and Hyperlapse in DJI Fly. To change Smart Snaps, press the mode button once per mode.

DJI Flip automated shots
From DJI's Flip manual and FAQ. Smart Snaps fly from the mode button or the app; QuickShots and MasterShots run from DJI Fly with a controller.

Smart Snaps (no controller)

Mode What it does
Follow Follows you and records
Dronie Flies backward and up while filming you
Circle Orbits around you
Rocket Climbs straight up with the camera pointing down
Spotlight Keeps the camera pointed at you
Custom: DirectionTrack (default) Films from the front as you approach, from behind as you walk away
Custom: Helix, Boomerang or Dolly Zoom Set in DJI Fly; Dolly Zoom added in May 2025 firmware

How to switch: press the mode button on the Flip once to move to the next mode. The Flip announces the mode by voice and lights its indicator. Press and hold to take off from your palm. Change distances, heights and the Custom slot in DJI Fly over Wi-Fi.

Smart Snaps only track people, run within 30 m high and 50 m away, and have no obstacle avoidance. Step-by-step palm use: Flip gestures.

QuickShots and MasterShots (with a controller)

  1. Tap the Shooting Mode icon on the right of the camera view and choose QuickShots or MasterShots.
  2. Pick a sub-mode, then drag a box around the subject or tap the plus icon.
  3. Tap record. The Flip flies the move, records, makes a short video and returns to where it started.
  4. Press Flight Pause on the controller to stop at any time.

QuickShots: DJI's manual gives space rules for two of them:

QuickShot Space DJI says you need
Boomerang 30 m radius around the drone, 10 m above
Asteroid 40 m behind and 50 m above the drone

The full list of QuickShots appears in DJI Fly once your controller is connected; it can change with firmware.

MasterShots: the Flip picks a route based on the subject and distance and strings together several classic moves automatically.

Other modes in DJI Fly

  • FocusTrack: Spotlight, POI (orbit at a set radius and speed) and ActiveTrack (follow at 2 to 10 m). See Flip ActiveTrack.
  • Hyperlapse: time-lapse while flying. See Flip hyperlapse.
  • Cruise Control: set a custom button to hold your current speed.
  • Flight modes: Cine, Normal and Sport on the controller's mode switch. Use Cine or Normal for filming; Sport turns off obstacle sensing.

Safety for automated shots

DJI says intelligent modes don't avoid obstacles, so:

  • Use them in open areas with strong GNSS, away from buildings, trees and wires.
  • Don't use them when the subject is in the air, moving fast, blends into the background, or the light is very dark or very bright.
  • Keep the drone in sight and a thumb near Flight Pause.

No waypoints

The Flip doesn't have Waypoint Flight. See Flip waypoints.
