DJI Mini 4 Pro horizon not level: how to calibrate the gimbal

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

A tilted horizon on the DJI Mini 4 Pro is usually fixed by gimbal calibration in DJI Fly: set the drone on a level surface with the protector off, open settings, go to Control and run gimbal calibration. If the picture is level on the ground but leans in the air, calibrate the IMU and compass instead. That's DJI's own fix for gimbal drift during flight.

Mini 4 Pro horizon: which fix?
When the horizon leans tells you what to calibrate. DJI's Mini 4 Pro manual gives IMU and compass calibration as the fix for gimbal drift in flight.

Before you calibrate

  • Take off the gimbal protector.
  • Use a hard, level surface such as a table.
  • Power on and let the camera finish its startup movement.
  • Don't touch or move the drone during calibration.

Run gimbal calibration

  1. Power on the drone and controller and open DJI Fly.
  2. In camera view, tap the settings icon and go to Control.
  3. Under Gimbal Settings, choose gimbal calibration. DJI's manual lists it there with gimbal mode and recentering.
  4. Run the automatic calibration and wait for it to finish.
  5. If the horizon is still slightly off, use the manual adjustment that recent DJI Fly versions offer. Line up a rooftop or the sea in the live view.

Menu wording changes between DJI Fly versions. If you can't find the option, update DJI Fly and the aircraft firmware.

Level on the ground, tilted in flight

This is drift. DJI's Mini 4 Pro manual says to calibrate the IMU and compass in DJI Fly, and contact DJI Support if it persists. Both live under Safety > Sensors, which shows their status and starts calibration. Do the IMU calibration on a flat surface indoors and the compass calibration outdoors, away from cars, rebar and metal. See how to calibrate the compass and IMU.

Some lean in wind is expected. DJI says the Mini 4 Pro adjusts its gimbal slightly in strong wind to keep footage steady, and that the gimbal may vibrate when the drone lifts its sideways flight limits to hold position in gusts.

"Not calibrating" or "gimbal calibration failed"

  • Moved or not level. Retry on a flat table, hands off.
  • Something touching the camera. Check for the protector, a filter, a sticker or debris.
  • Protection mode. DJI says the gimbal motor can trip when blocked on uneven ground or grass. Restart it flat. See Mini 4 Pro gimbal stuck.
  • Out-of-date firmware. Update in DJI Fly.
  • Damage. A bent gimbal arm or damaged motor won't calibrate. That's a repair.

Vertical shooting looks crooked

The Mini 4 Pro rotates its camera 90° for True Vertical Shooting. If only vertical footage leans, calibrate in landscape first, then switch back to portrait and check again.

Quick fix in editing

For footage already shot, rotate and crop slightly in your editor. It costs a little resolution but saves the clip. For other models, read DJI gimbal not level, and more on the drone is in the Mini 4 Pro guide.
