How to start a real estate drone photography business

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

To start a real estate drone photography business, get your FAA Part 107 certificate, register a drone with good dynamic range such as the DJI Mini 4 Pro or Air 3S, insure it, build a sample portfolio from a few homes, then sell simple packages to local agents and builders. Real estate is one of the easiest drone niches to enter because agents need photos for every listing and book again and again.

Both drones handle listing photos and 4K video. The Air 3S's larger sensor and 70 mm lens help at dusk and for compressed neighborhood shots.

Get legal first

  • Part 107 for any paid flight, including flights for an agent's listing. See real estate drone license.
  • Register the drone for $5, even a 249 g Mini, and confirm it broadcasts Remote ID.
  • Liability insurance: many brokerages require a certificate before you fly.
  • LAANC: many suburbs sit in controlled airspace. See LAANC explained.

Choose your drone

The DJI Mini 4 Pro is a low-cost start: 48 MP stills, 4K/60 HDR video and omnidirectional obstacle sensing in a 249 g body. The DJI Air 3S adds a 1-inch main sensor for cleaner twilight shots and a 70 mm telephoto that makes the home look closer to a nearby lake, downtown or golf course. For indoor fly-through tours, some businesses add a small FPV-style drone, which takes real skill to fly inside safely.

What agents want

Most listing packages include:

  • 10 to 25 edited aerial photos: front, rear, each corner, overhead, and context shots of the neighborhood
  • A short 4K video of 30 to 90 seconds, often with a vertical cut for social media
  • Lot lines or labels added in editing for land and acreage listings
  • Optional twilight shots and ground photography

Delivery: Zillow, the MLS and social

Listing sites like Zillow show the photos the listing agent uploads, usually through the MLS. Deliver MLS-ready JPEGs sized to your local MLS's rules, plus full-resolution files and a branded and unbranded video (many MLSs don't allow branding). Fast turnaround, often next day, wins repeat business.

Packages and pricing

Sell two or three tiers (photos only, photos plus video, premium with twilight) instead of hourly rates. Price from your costs, editing time and local competition. See real estate drone photography pricing.

Finding agents

  1. Shoot three or four homes for free or at cost to build a portfolio.
  2. Visit brokerage offices and offer a first-listing discount.
  3. Team up with ground photographers who don't fly, or offer both.
  4. Pitch builders and land brokers, who list often.
  5. Ask every agent for a review and referral.

Some real estate media companies hire freelance drone pilots. That's a good way to get steady volume while you build direct clients. See real estate drone jobs.
