An Air 3S "drone only" or "aircraft only" unit is worth it only if you already have a compatible controller and batteries, typically to replace a lost or damaged drone. You'll need an RC-N3, RC-N2, DJI RC 2 or RC Pro 2, an Air 3S or Air 3 battery, and a 60 W or higher USB-C charger. The Air 3S can't fly from a phone alone.

Is aircraft-only actually cheaper?
Our standard DJI Air 3S kit is $1,209 and already includes the RC-N3 controller, one battery and spare propellers. Buying a controller ($142 for an RC-N3) and a battery ($270 for an Air 3S battery) separately adds up fast. Unless you already own both, the standard kit is the better buy.
What works with an aircraft-only Air 3S
Controllers. RC-N3, RC-N2, DJI RC 2 or RC Pro 2. The RC-N1 and the original DJI RC aren't on the list, and DJI goggles don't work with the Air 3S. See Air 3S controllers.
Batteries. The Air 3S Intelligent Flight Battery, or the Air 3 battery. With an Air 3 battery, Off-State QuickTransfer isn't available. Aircraft-only listings don't always include a battery, so check.
Charging. Any USB-C PD charger of 60 W or more, through the drone's USB-C port, or the Air 3 Series Battery Charging Hub for three packs.
Propellers. Air 3 Series Low-Noise Propellers fit. Keep a spare set.
Storage. The Air 3S has 42 GB built in, but add a V30 microSD card from DJI's list for longer shoots. See Air 3S SD card.
Setting up a replacement Air 3S
- Link it to your controller in DJI Fly. See how to pair a DJI controller.
- Update firmware on the aircraft and controller.
- Update your FAA registration. Add the new drone's Remote ID serial number in FAADroneZone and mark your registration number on it. See Air 3S Remote ID.
- Consider DJI Care Refresh. It must be bought before activation or within 48 hours. See Care Refresh for Air 3S.
What to watch out for
- Used or gray-market drones may be tied to another person's DJI account or come without a valid warranty.
- Missing parts. Confirm the gimbal protector and any included props.
- US legality. The Air 3S was FCC authorized before the December 2025 Covered List decision, so it's legal to buy and fly. See can you buy the Air 3S in the US.
