The DJI Avata 2 works with two current controllers: the DJI RC Motion 3, which comes in the standard kits, and the DJI FPV Remote Controller 3, a two-stick controller. Pick the RC Motion 3 for the easiest flying and one-push Easy ACRO flips. Pick the FPV Remote Controller 3 if you want to learn real FPV, because it's the only way to fly the Avata 2 in Manual (acro) mode. Both need DJI Goggles 3 or Goggles N3.

Compatible controllers
| Controller | Goggles it works with | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DJI RC Motion 3 | Goggles 3, Goggles N3 | In the box, $109 separately |
| DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 | Goggles 3, Goggles N3 | Sticks, Manual mode |
| DJI RC Motion 2 | Goggles 2, Goggles Integra | Older system |
| DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 | Goggles 2, Goggles Integra | Older system |
DJI's Avata 2 FAQ is clear on the pairing: Goggles 3 and N3 work only with the "3" controllers, and Goggles 2 and Integra only with the "2" controllers.
Not compatible: the DJI RC 2, RC-N3 and other camera-drone remotes, third-party radios (including ELRS), and flying without goggles.
RC Motion 3
You point the controller where you want to go and squeeze the accelerator. Tilt to turn, use the joystick to climb, descend or slide.
- About 118 g, about 10 hours per charge, about 2 hours to charge.
- Normal and Sport modes, plus Easy ACRO (flips, rolls, 180° drift, Power Loop).
- Beginner mode is on for the first flight and limits speed to 1 m/s.
- Lock button: press twice to start motors, hold to take off, press to brake.
It's the fastest way to get flying. Most people are cruising smoothly in their first session.
FPV Remote Controller 3
A traditional two-stick FPV radio with an N/S/M flight mode switch.
- About 240 g, about 10 hours per charge, about 2 hours to charge.
- Manual mode with adjustable Gain and Expo. It's off by default; you tighten the throttle stick screws so it doesn't re-center, then enable it in the goggles. See Avata 2 manual mode.
- Works with simulators such as Liftoff, Uncrashed, The Drone Racing League and DCL, so you can practice on a computer.
- Easy ACRO isn't available with this controller; in Manual mode you do flips yourself.
Which should you choose?
- New to drones, or want relaxed cinematic flying: RC Motion 3.
- Want to learn freestyle and eventually fly custom quads: FPV Remote Controller 3, plus simulator time.
- Both: many pilots start with the Motion 3 and add the FPV RC 3 later. Only one controller can fly the drone at a time.
Linking a new controller
Update firmware first. Then, with everything powered on, hold the power buttons on the goggles and controller until they beep to link. Kit devices come pre-linked. See Avata 2 not connecting.
FAA note
Whichever controller you use, US rules require a visual observer next to you while you wear goggles. See are FPV drones legal.
For grip and stick technique, read how to hold an FPV controller. Shop the DJI RC Motion 3 or the DJI Avata 2 kits.
