How to update DJI Avata 2 firmware (and fix failed updates)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

To update the DJI Avata 2, power on the drone, goggles and controller so they're linked, plug your phone into the goggles' USB-C port, open DJI Fly, and follow the update prompt. That updates the whole set: aircraft, goggles and remote. If it fails, use DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) on a computer to update each device on its own. As of October 2026, DJI's latest release notes (July 30, 2026) list Avata 2 firmware V01.00.0500 and Goggles 3 firmware V01.00.1400.

Two ways to update Avata 2
DJI's Avata 2 manual lists both methods. Charge the goggles to at least 20% and the controller to at least 15% first.

Before you update

  • Goggles at 20% or more, remote at 15% or more (DJI's minimums). Charge the flight battery too.
  • Write down your settings. DJI warns that an update can reset RTH altitude and max flight distance.
  • Internet on the phone or computer for the whole update.
  • Good cable: a standard USB-C data cable or MFi Lightning cable.

Method 1: DJI Fly (whole set)

  1. Power on the Avata 2, goggles and remote. Make sure all three are linked.
  2. Connect the phone to the goggles' USB-C port and open DJI Fly.
  3. Tap the update prompt and keep the app open until it finishes.
  4. Expect the gimbal to go limp and the drone to reboot and beep. That's normal.
  5. Restart the drone, remote and goggles afterward, as DJI's release notes advise.
  6. Insert each spare battery and power on. The goggles prompt you to update the battery. Do it before takeoff.

Method 2: DJI Assistant 2 (one device at a time)

  1. Install DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) from the Avata 2 downloads page and log in.
  2. Power on one device and connect it to the computer by USB-C.
  3. Select the device, click Firmware Update, choose the version and confirm.
  4. Wait for it to download, install and restart. Don't unplug the cable.
  5. Repeat for the goggles and the remote.

DJI also says to update all devices to the latest firmware before linking a new combination, such as adding new goggles or a different controller.

If the update fails

  1. Restart everything (drone, remote, goggles, and DJI Fly or Assistant 2), then try again. This is DJI's first fix.
  2. Charge up. Low goggles or controller battery is a common cause.
  3. Try another cable. Charge-only cables can't carry data.
  4. Update DJI Fly to the latest version (the July 2026 firmware lists DJI Fly V1.21.8).
  5. Use Assistant 2 for whichever device failed.
  6. Still stuck, or a device won't boot? Contact us through repair.

"Location info not updated" message

If the goggles show a message that location info hasn't updated, connect the goggles to DJI Fly on a phone with internet and location services turned on, let the app sync, then restart the set. If the message keeps coming back after updating everything, contact DJI support or us.

After updating

  • Reset your RTH altitude and max distance.
  • Recheck camera settings and any custom button mapping.
  • Hover test in an open area before your first real flight.
