How to update DJI Flip firmware (and fix failed updates)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

To update the DJI Flip, connect it to DJI Fly with your controller, make sure the phone or DJI RC 2 is online, and tap the update prompt when it appears. You can also update from a computer with DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series). DJI's release notes warn that camera settings reset after a Flip update, so check them before your next flight.

Update in DJI Fly

  1. Charge the Flip's battery and the controller.
  2. Connect the phone (RC-N3 or RC-N2) or the RC 2 to good Wi-Fi.
  3. Power on the controller and the Flip, and open DJI Fly.
  4. When DJI Fly says new firmware is available, tap it and follow the prompts.
  5. Keep the app open on screen until the update finishes. The Flip may restart during the process.
  6. Update DJI Fly too. New Flip features require a minimum app version, listed in each release note.
  7. Power on each spare battery in the Flip to check for a battery update prompt.

Folding both rear arms won't power the Flip off during a firmware update, so you won't interrupt it by accident.

Update with DJI Assistant 2

  1. Download DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) from the Flip downloads page and log in.
  2. Power on the Flip and connect it to the computer by USB-C data cable.
  3. Select the Flip, open firmware updates, pick a version and start.
  4. Don't unplug it until it's done. Update the controller separately if needed.

What recent updates added

From DJI's Flip release notes:

  • January 2025: app audio recording and voice control, DirectionTrack, 4K/100fps slow motion, and the option to power off by folding the arms.
  • March 2025: fixes.
  • May 2025: Dolly Zoom added to Smart Snaps, better skin tones in 12 MP photos and video at 30 fps or below.

Check the release notes on the downloads page for anything newer.

If the update fails

  1. Restart the Flip, the controller and DJI Fly (or Assistant 2) and try again. This is DJI's first recommendation.
  2. Charge both the Flip and the controller.
  3. Use stable Wi-Fi and keep DJI Fly in the foreground.
  4. Update DJI Fly from the App Store or DJI's website.
  5. Try Assistant 2 with a known-good data cable and a different USB port.
  6. Won't power on afterward, or keeps failing? Contact our repair team.

More fixes: DJI firmware update failed and DJI firmware update error.

After the update

  • Reset your camera settings (resolution, frame rate, color).
  • Check RTH altitude and max altitude in Safety settings.
  • If you rely on fold-to-power-off, confirm it's set the way you like in DJI Fly.
