How to set the home point and Return to Home on the DJI Avata 2

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

On the DJI Avata 2, press and hold the Mode button on the RC Motion 3 to start Return to Home (RTH). On the FPV Remote Controller 3, press and hold the Flight Pause/RTH button until it beeps. The Home Point records automatically at the first spot with a strong GPS signal, and you set the RTH altitude in the goggles under Settings > Safety before each flight.

How the Home Point is recorded

  • The first location where the Avata 2 gets a strong to moderately strong GPS signal (white GPS icon) becomes the Home Point.
  • It can update at takeoff if the drone gets another strong fix. If the signal is weak, it won't update.
  • When it updates, the aircraft status light blinks green quickly and the goggles show a prompt.
  • In flight, an H in the goggles shows where the Home Point is.

Wait for that confirmation before you take off. Without a recorded Home Point, RTH can't bring the drone back. Near tall buildings or with weak GPS, DJI warns the Home Point may be inaccurate.

Set RTH altitude

Open the goggles menu with the 5D button, go to Settings > Safety, and set RTH altitude higher than the trees and buildings around you. DJI says to set it before every flight. Also note that a firmware update can reset RTH altitude, so recheck it after updates.

What the Avata 2 does during RTH

Distance from home Action
Under 5 m Lands immediately
5 to 20 m Flies straight back at current altitude
Over 20 m Climbs to RTH altitude, then flies home (or stays at current altitude if higher)

It then lands with Landing Protection, which checks the ground and hovers if it's unsuitable.

Three ways RTH starts

  1. You trigger it with the button above.
  2. Low battery. A warning appears in the goggles and RTH starts after the prompt. You can cancel it, but DJI warns the drone may not have enough power to land safely.
  3. Signal lost. If the control or video signal drops and Signal Lost Action is set to RTH, the Avata 2 first flies backward 50 m along its original route, then runs the normal RTH. You can change this action to hover or land in the goggles.

Important limits

  • No obstacle avoidance on the way home. DJI says obstacles around and above the Avata 2 can't be detected during RTH. A high RTH altitude is your protection.
  • Needs GPS. If GPS is weak or lost after failsafe RTH starts, the drone descends and lands where it is.
  • GEO zones can make it hover mid-return.
  • Wind can stop it from reaching home.

Practice it once

In an open field, fly 30 to 50 m out, hold the RTH button, and watch it climb and return. Cancel and take over near the end so you know both controls. If it doesn't return as expected, see DJI Return to Home not working. After a crash, follow Avata 2 crash: what to do.
