The DJI Mavic 4 Pro records its Home Point at takeoff when it has a strong GNSS signal or good light, and DJI Fly announces it with a voice prompt. You can update it in flight under Settings > Safety, or turn on Dynamic Home Point so it follows your controller. To bring the drone back, press and hold the RTH button until the controller beeps. Press it again to cancel.

Set or update the Home Point
- Automatic: recorded at takeoff. Wait for the voice prompt before flying away.
- Manual update: open settings, then Safety > Update Home Point, for example after you walk to a new spot.
- Dynamic Home Point: with the DJI RC 2 or RC Pro 2, choose Update Home Point > Dynamic Home Point > Update. The Home Point keeps moving to the controller's location while its GNSS signal is strong. The RTH icon turns blue.
With Dynamic Home Point, DJI says RTH brings the drone back near the Home Point, then it exits RTH and hovers so you can land it yourself. Use it in the open; a weak controller GNSS signal leaves the Home Point at the last good fix. It's the setting to use on a boat.
Start and cancel RTH
- Controller: press and hold the Flight Pause/RTH button until it beeps.
- DJI Fly: tap the icon on the left of the camera view, then press and hold the RTH icon.
- Cancel: tap the icon in DJI Fly or press the RTH button. You get control back right away.
- Brake: during Advanced RTH, pull the pitch stick all the way back to stop, hover and exit.
RTH settings
Open settings, then Safety, and scroll to Return to Home:
- Optimal: in good light, the drone plans the shortest path and picks its own altitude, ignoring your RTH altitude. In poor light it falls back to Preset.
- Preset: farther than 50 m and below RTH altitude, it flies to open space, climbs to RTH altitude and returns. In poor light it climbs to RTH altitude and flies straight home.
- RTH altitude: set it above every obstacle on the route, and keep it at or below 400 ft. It can't be changed after RTH starts.
DJI recommends Preset if power lines or towers the drone can't bypass are on the way home. In poor light, the forward-facing LiDAR can make the drone climb over an obstacle ahead during Preset RTH.
Low battery and signal loss
- Low battery: DJI Fly warns when there's only enough power to get home. If you don't respond before the countdown ends, RTH starts. If you cancel and keep flying, the drone lands on its own when the battery can only cover the descent.
- Signal lost: set Signal Lost Action to RTH, Hover or Land. With RTH, the drone keeps returning even if the signal comes back.
- Poor light and signal loss: it first flies backward 50 m along its original route, then switches to Preset RTH.
Watch for these
- Thin and clear obstacles: DJI warns about branches, power lines, water and glass during RTH. Take over if needed.
- GEO and Altitude Zones can lower the return altitude.
- Strong wind can stop it reaching home. Turn back early.
- No GNSS: DJI says don't fly over water or glass, or higher than 30 m, if you took off without GNSS.
Test RTH once over an open field before you rely on it. If it doesn't behave, read DJI Return to Home not working.
