How high can the DJI Avata 2 fly? Altitude limit and unlock

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

In the US you can fly the DJI Avata 2 up to 400 ft (about 120 m) above the ground, the FAA limit for recreational and Part 107 pilots. The drone itself is rated to take off from up to 5,000 m (16,404 ft) above sea level, and you set its own ceiling in the goggles under Settings > Safety. If it seems stuck lower, it's usually the 50 m weak-GPS limit or the 30 m limit for flying without a DJI Fly login.

DJI Avata 2 height limits
The FAA limit is 400 ft above the ground. The Avata 2 also caps itself at 50 m with weak GPS, and at 30 m if you aren't logged in to DJI Fly.

The limits that apply

Limit What it means
400 ft AGL US legal limit above the ground below the drone
Max Altitude setting Your ceiling, set in the goggles, measured from takeoff
50 m (164 ft) Automatic cap when GPS is weak and light is good
3 m (10 ft) Automatic cap above the ground with weak GPS in low light
30 m high, 50 m away Cap when not connected or logged in to DJI Fly
5,000 m Highest takeoff elevation above sea level DJI rates

How to change the height limit

Press the 5D button on the goggles, open Settings > Safety, and set Max Altitude (and Max Distance if you want). In the US, 120 m keeps you just under 400 ft from the takeoff point. Set your RTH altitude here too, above nearby trees and buildings, because the Avata 2 can't avoid obstacles on the way home.

If you fly above a newly lowered limit, the drone descends to it at 5 m/s.

"Height limit unlock": why it's stuck at 50 m or 30 m

Weak GPS. DJI's manual says that with a weak GNSS signal, altitude is limited to 50 m from takeoff in good light, or 3 m above the ground in low light while the infrared sensor works. The cap is removed for the rest of the flight once the GNSS signal shows strong (white or yellow) after power-on. Fix: power on in open sky and wait for a solid lock before takeoff.

Not logged in. DJI limits flights to 30 m high and 50 m away when the system isn't connected or logged in to DJI Fly. Activate the drone and log in with your phone connected to the goggles.

GEO zones. Since January 13, 2025, DJI shows most US airspace zones as warnings instead of locks. Some regulatory restricted zones still block flight, and altitude zones can trigger a landing after a 100-second countdown. Unlock requests go through DJI FlySafe. A DJI unlock is not FAA permission; near airports you still need LAANC. See LAANC explained.

There's no unlock that makes it legal to fly above 400 ft over open ground in the US.

Exceptions to 400 ft

  • Part 107 near a structure: you may fly higher if you stay within 400 ft of the structure horizontally and no more than 400 ft above its top.
  • Controlled airspace: LAANC often grants less than 400 ft near airports.
  • TFRs and no-fly zones override everything. See drone no-fly zones.

Measure from the ground, not the screen

The height in the goggles is measured from the takeoff point. Dive off a hill and the ground drops away, so you can be far higher above it than the display shows. Mountain-surfing FPV pilots should watch terrain closely.

High-elevation flying

DJI notes performance and battery output are limited above 5,000 m, and braking distance grows with altitude. Above 3,000 m it recommends allowing at least 20 m vertically and 25 m horizontally to stop. Cold air also cuts battery capacity. See Avata 2 battery life.

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
