How high can the DJI Air 3S fly? Altitude limit explained

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

In the US you can fly the DJI Air 3S up to 400 ft (about 120 m) above the ground, the FAA limit for both recreational and Part 107 pilots. The drone itself can go much higher: DJI rates its maximum takeoff altitude at 6,000 m (19,685 ft) above sea level, and the Max Altitude setting in DJI Fly can be set above 400 ft. Staying legal is your job, not the drone's.

DJI Air 3S height limits
The FAA limit is 400 ft above the ground. The Air 3S also caps itself lower when it powers on without a strong GPS signal or isn't connected to DJI Fly.

Three different "max altitudes"

Number What it means
400 ft AGL The legal US limit, measured above the ground below the drone
Your DJI Fly setting The software ceiling you choose, measured from the takeoff point
6,000 m The highest elevation above sea level DJI says the Air 3S can take off from

So you can launch from a 10,000 ft mountain pass, but you still can't climb more than 400 ft above the terrain beneath you.

How to set the altitude limit

In DJI Fly, open Settings > Safety and set Max Altitude (and Max Distance if you want one). A good US habit is 120 m (about 394 ft), so you can't drift over the line by accident. DJI's pre-flight checklist also says to set a sensible Auto RTH Altitude, above the tallest trees and buildings nearby but below your Max Altitude.

DJI Fly measures height from the takeoff point, not the ground under the drone. Take off from a hilltop and fly over a valley, and you may be well over 400 ft above the ground while the app shows less. Launch from a valley toward a ridge, and the reverse happens.

Why is my Air 3S stuck at 30 m?

DJI's manual lists these automatic limits when the GPS (GNSS) signal is weak:

  • 30 m (98 ft) above the takeoff point if the light is good.
  • 3 m (10 ft) above the ground in low light while the 3D infrared sensor is working.
  • 30 m in low light if the infrared sensor isn't working.

The limit is lifted for the rest of the flight once the drone sees a strong signal (strength 2 or more) after power-on. Fix: power on in open sky, wait for a solid GPS lock and the Home Point to record, then take off.

There's one more cap. If the drone isn't connected to DJI Fly or you aren't logged in, DJI limits flight to 30 m high and 50 m (164 ft) away. Log in and keep the app running.

When the 400 ft rule has exceptions

  • Part 107 near structures: you may fly higher than 400 ft above the ground if you stay within 400 ft of a structure horizontally and no more than 400 ft above its top.
  • Controlled airspace: LAANC often approves less than 400 ft near airports, sometimes zero. See LAANC explained.
  • No-fly zones and TFRs override everything. See drone no-fly zones.

Flying at high elevation

Thin air makes the props work harder, so expect shorter flights and slower climbs in the mountains. Cold also cuts battery capacity: DJI recommends warming the battery to at least 10° C (50° F) before takeoff in cold weather. Read Air 3S battery life and Air 3S temperature limits before a mountain trip.

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
