A thermal drone is a drone with an infrared (thermal) camera that sees heat instead of visible light. Every object gives off infrared energy based on its temperature, and the drone's sensor turns those differences into an image, so a person, animal, hot electrical joint or roof leak shows up even in darkness or light smoke. Most professional thermal drones pair the thermal camera with normal zoom and wide cameras, so you can find a hot spot and then identify it.

How the thermal camera works
DJI's thermal drones use an uncooled vanadium oxide (VOx) microbolometer: a grid of tiny sensors that warm up slightly when infrared energy hits them. Key specs:
- Wavelength: 8 to 14 μm, the long-wave band where people and buildings radiate.
- Resolution: 640 × 512 is the common professional standard. The Zenmuse H30T has a native 1280 × 1024 sensor.
- Sensitivity (NETD): about ≤50 mK on DJI's models, meaning it can separate temperature differences of about 0.05 °C.
- Radiometric: DJI saves R-JPEG files that store a temperature for every pixel, so you can measure spots and areas later.
Thermal sees surfaces, not through things. It can't see through walls, roofs, glass or dense tree cover, and sun-heated rock or pavement can hide a warm body on a hot afternoon.
What the "thermal drone view" looks like
You choose a color palette. White Hot shows warm as white, Black Hot reverses it, and palettes like Iron Red or Rainbow spread temperatures across colors for inspections. DJI drones also offer split-screen views with the zoom camera.
What thermal drones are used for
- Search and rescue and police work at night. See thermal search and rescue.
- Firefighting: hot spots through light smoke.
- Roof and building inspection: wet insulation and heat loss. See thermal roof inspection.
- Electrical and solar inspection: overheating connectors and panels.
- Wildlife surveys and deer recovery: see thermal wildlife surveys.
- Lost pets: see find a lost pet with a thermal drone.

| Matrice 30T | 640 × 512 | Wide, zoom, rangefinder | IP55 rated |
| Mavic 3T | 640 × 512 | 48 MP wide, 56× hybrid zoom | Smallest, 45 min rated |

Searches for "X10" or other model names usually mean other brands. Skydio's US-made X10, for example, uses a 640 × 512 Teledyne FLIR Boson+ sensor. Compare resolution, sensitivity and support the same way.
Rules for flying thermal
Most thermal work is commercial, so you need a Part 107 certificate, registration and Remote ID. Night flights need anti-collision lights visible for 3 statute miles. Recreational flyers can't use the drone for paid work.
The US also has two open questions for thermal drones from foreign makers: the FCC's December 2025 Covered List action blocks new models, and a July 2026 FCC proposal would restrict further import and sale of thermal-capable drones. It isn't adopted yet. See is DJI banned in the US.
