The DJI O4 Air Unit is DJI's digital FPV video system for custom quads. It works with DJI Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 plus the FPV Remote Controller 3, and with Goggles 2 or Goggles Integra plus the FPV Remote Controller 2. It weighs about 8.2 g with its camera, records 4K/60 to 23 GB of built-in storage, and reaches up to 10 km (FCC) with Goggles 3 or N3. Third-party goggles aren't supported.

O4 Air Unit or O4 Air Unit Pro?
DJI pitches the standard O4 at 2-inch and smaller frames, cinewhoops and racing practice. Its transmission module is 30 × 30 mm and 6 mm tall. DJI pitches the Pro at 3-inch and larger frames, where you want 4K/120, 10-bit D-Log M and a 155° lens. If you fly a tiny whoop, the Pro's 32 g matters a lot; on a 5-inch it hardly does.
Compatible goggles and controllers
| Goggles | Controller | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DJI Goggles 3 | FPV Remote Controller 3 | Lowest latency, racing mode |
| DJI Goggles N3 | FPV Remote Controller 3 | Racing mode supported |
| Goggles 2, Goggles Integra | FPV Remote Controller 2 | Under 35 ms latency |
You can also fly with your own radio and receiver. To use a DJI FPV controller, set the flight controller to SBUS. DJI lists Betaflight 4.3.0 or later and INAV 8.0.1 or later.
O3 Air Unit owners: Goggles 3 support the O3 too, but the O4 isn't a drop-in swap. DJI says the O4's modules are a different size, and only the 3-in-1 cable is shared with the O3 (the O4 Pro also shares the antenna). Full chart: DJI goggles compatibility.
Setup in five steps
- Wire it. Power (3.7 to 13.2 V on the standard O4), ground, and UART: air unit RX to flight controller TX, air unit TX to FC RX. See build an FPV drone.
- Activate it. Connect the air unit to a computer by USB-C, open DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) and log in. Until it's activated, transmit power is limited to 20 mW or less and the goggles menu won't work.
- Update firmware for the air unit, goggles and controller in DJI Assistant 2.
- Link. In the goggles menu, select the product under Status. Press the air unit's link button (its LED blinks red), then the goggles' link button. Solid green means linked.
- Link the controller to the goggles the same way, then set up OSD in Betaflight.
Range, latency and power
- Range: 10 km FCC with Goggles 3 or N3, measured in an open area with no interference. Your battery will run out long before that on a small quad.
- Latency: as low as 20 ms with Goggles 3 and 24 ms with N3 in racing mode (1080p/100fps), and under 35 ms with Goggles 2 or Integra.
- Transmit power: up to 700 mW on the standard O4, set in the goggles under Transmission. Available levels vary by region.
Common O4 problems
- Hot on the bench, video drops. The O4 goes into low-power mode on the ground and can overheat without airflow. Take off promptly or add a fan when testing.
- Video but no OSD. Check the channel setting and that OSD is enabled, and that your flight controller firmware supports DJI's Canvas mode.
- Won't link. Update every device first. DJI says devices on old firmware may not link.
- Weak signal. Make sure it's activated (20 mW cap otherwise) and the antenna isn't blocked or twisted.
- Wobbly stabilized footage. DJI notes motor vibration can resonate with the camera's IMU. Soft-mount the camera or use a TPU mount.
Rules for custom FPV builds
A build under 250 g flown for fun doesn't need FAA registration. Over 250 g, register it and add Remote ID. With goggles on you need a visual observer beside you. Read are FPV drones legal and FAA registration.
