DJI RC 2 vs RC-N3: which controller should you get?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The DJI RC 2 has its own 5.5-inch, 700-nit screen, so you power it on and fly. The DJI RC-N3 uses your phone as the screen and costs much less. Both fly the Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Air 3, Air 3S, Neo and Flip. Choose the RC 2 if you fly often or for work, and the RC-N3 if you want the lowest price and your phone is bright and well charged.

DJI RC 2 vs RC-N3
From DJI's specs and our current prices. The RC 2 is the faster, simpler setup. The RC-N3 costs much less if your phone has a bright screen.

Both run the DJI Fly app experience and use DJI's O4 video link with O4-generation drones. Range depends on the drone, not just the controller.

What the RC 2 does better

  • Setup speed. Turn it on and DJI Fly is already running. No cables, no phone clamp, no app permissions.
  • No interruptions. Phone calls, texts and low-phone-battery warnings can't cover the live view mid-flight.
  • Sunlight. At 700 nits the screen stays readable outdoors. Many phones dim when they warm up.
  • Your phone stays free. It keeps its battery for maps, calls and posting.
  • Remote ID location. The RC 2's own GNSS reports the controller's position, which Standard Remote ID broadcasts.
  • Custom buttons. C1 and C2 can be set in DJI Fly.

What the RC-N3 does better

  • Price. It costs $264 less at our current prices.
  • Bigger screen, if you want one. A large phone shows more detail than a 5.5-inch display.
  • Instant sharing. Footage previews and edits land directly on your phone.
  • Lighter and longer running, as long as your phone has its own charge.

Things people miss

  • The RC 2 can't run other apps. DJI says you can't install third-party apps on it. To share clips, DJI recommends QuickTransfer from the drone to your phone over Wi-Fi.
  • Phone compatibility. The RC-N3 needs a phone that runs DJI Fly well. Older or budget phones can stutter. Check DJI Fly's supported devices before you rely on it.
  • One controller at a time. A drone links to one controller. If you own both, re-pair when you switch. See how to pair a DJI controller.
  • Older drones. Neither works with the Mini 3 or Mavic 3 series, which use the RC-N1, DJI RC and RC Pro. The full chart is in DJI RC 2 compatibility.
  • Firmware first. Some pairings, such as the RC-N3 with the Mini 4 Pro, arrived through firmware updates. Update both devices before you link them.

Buying in a kit vs separately

Many Fly More Combos include the RC 2, so buying the combo is often the cheapest way to get one. The Mini 4 Pro is a good example: the standard kit comes with the RC-N2 (the RC-N3's predecessor), while the Fly More Combo includes the RC 2, three batteries and a charging hub. See is the Fly More Combo worth it.

Choose the RC-N3 if

  • You want the lowest price or a spare controller
  • Your phone has a bright screen and plenty of battery
  • You fly occasionally, for fun

Choose the RC 2 if

  • You fly often, for work, or while traveling
  • You want faster setup and a screen readable in sun
  • You don't want calls or notifications interrupting a flight
  • You might move up to a Mavic 4 Pro later

Quick answers

Is the RC 2 worth the extra money? For regular flyers, yes. The time saved at every launch and the dedicated screen add up.

Does the RC 2 have better range? Range is set by the drone's video system and conditions. The RC 2's adjustable external antennas help when they face the drone.

Can I use the RC 2 with my old Mini 3? No. It needs an O4-generation drone.
