DJI RS 4 battery life and the BG70 battery grip

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The DJI RS 4 runs up to 12 hours on its included BG21 grip (3000 mAh), and up to 29.5 hours with the optional BG70 High-Capacity Battery Grip. The RS 4 Mini lasts up to 13 hours on its built-in battery, and the RS 4 Pro up to 13 hours on its BG30 grip or 29 hours with the BG70. DJI measures these with the gimbal balanced and still, so expect less on a real shoot.

DJI RS 4 series max runtime
DJI's figures, measured with the gimbal balanced, level and stationary, powering only the gimbal. Real runtime is shorter when the gimbal moves or powers accessories.

The BG70 High-Capacity Battery Grip

  • Capacity: 4800 mAh, 69.12 Wh.
  • Runtime: up to 29.5 hours on the RS 4 and 29 hours on the RS 4 Pro.
  • Powers your camera: a USB-C port on the bottom supplies up to 18 W to cameras and accessories. DJI notes it charges mainstream cameras only when they're powered off, at a speed set by the camera's charging protocol.
  • Fits: RS 5, RS 4 Pro, RS 4, RS 3 Pro, RS 3 and RS 2, per its product listing.
  • Our price: $164. See the DJI RS BG70 High-Capacity Battery Grip.

It's a good buy if you shoot long event days, weddings or timelapses, or want to power a small camera accessory from the gimbal.

Extra and spare batteries

  • RS 4: the BG21 grip is removable, so a second BG21 or a BG70 makes a quick swap. DJI says the RS 4 grip also fits the RS 3, but not the RS 4 Pro.
  • RS 4 Pro: uses the BG30 grip or the BG70.
  • RS 4 Mini: the battery is built in and can't be swapped. DJI says you can use it while charging, so a USB-C power bank on a cable extends a shoot. DJI recommends a PD fast charger of 30 W or more.

Getting the most runtime

  1. Balance carefully. DJI warns that imbalance shortens battery life and severe imbalance can overheat the gimbal. See how to balance the RS 4.
  2. Run Auto Tune so stiffness matches the payload.
  3. Use sleep mode between takes: press the power button once to lock the axes.
  4. Watch accessories. Powering a camera, focus motor or transmitter from the gimbal reduces its runtime.
  5. Charge with the right charger: PD for the RS 4 and Mini, QC 2.0 or PD for the RS 4 Pro.
  6. Check the level while off: press the battery level button (RS 4 and Pro) or the power button once (RS 4 Mini).

Flying with gimbal batteries

All of these are under 100 Wh, including the 69.12 Wh BG70, so they don't need airline approval under US rules. Spare lithium batteries, including a spare grip, must go in carry-on bags with terminals protected. See traveling with a drone for the same battery rules.

Charging problems

If the grip won't charge, try a different PD charger and cable, and on first use, plug it in to wake the battery as DJI's manual describes. Persistent issues: contact us.
