Can you fly a drone near the Eiffel Tower?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

No. The Eiffel Tower sits in the middle of Paris, which is a prohibited zone for leisure drones. French rules also ban flying over public space in any built-up area, so the Champ de Mars, the Trocadéro and the Seine are all off-limits. A small drone like a 249 g DJI Mini doesn't get an exception, and police near the tower watch for drones.

Can you fly a drone at the Eiffel Tower?
The Eiffel Tower sits inside Paris's prohibited airspace, where leisure drones are banned whatever their weight. Rural France is open after registration and a map check.

Why it's banned

  • Prohibited airspace over Paris. The whole city is covered by a permanent prohibited zone, LF-P 23 Paris, in force since March 29, 2018. Only authorized flights, such as police or approved professional work, can enter it.
  • No flying over towns. France's leisure drone rules, summarized on the government's Service-Public drone guide, ban flights over public space en agglomération, meaning built-up areas.
  • Crowds and security. The tower is one of the most visited monuments in the world, with heavy security and constant crowds. You can't fly over people anywhere in the EU's open category.
  • Sensitive sites. French rules ban flying over sensitive or protected sites, such as nuclear plants, military land and nature reserves, and many monuments are marked on the map.

The official map on Géoportail shows Paris as a no-fly zone for leisure drones.

What happens if you fly

Flying into a prohibited zone is a criminal offense in France. Service-Public lists 1 to 6 months in prison, a fine of 15,000 to 75,000 euros, and confiscation of the drone for breaking the safety rules or overflight bans. Police patrol the tower area and respond to drone sightings. A "quick hover" at sunset is exactly what they look for.

What about professional drone shots of the tower?

The aerial footage you see in films and ads was shot by professional operators with special authorizations from the French authorities, coordinated well in advance. That process isn't open to a tourist with a hobby drone.

How to get the shot legally

  • From the tower itself. The second floor and summit decks give a view no drone could legally match.
  • From the Trocadéro. The classic straight-on view, best at sunrise before the crowds.
  • From Montparnasse Tower. Its rooftop deck gives the skyline with the Eiffel Tower in it.
  • From the Arc de Triomphe. The rooftop looks down the avenues toward the tower.

A pocket gimbal from our Osmo cameras collection gives smooth walking shots under the tower, and night shots of the sparkle show work well with a stable handheld camera.

Where you can fly in France

Outside Paris and other built-up areas, France follows the EU drone rules:

  1. Register with the DGAC on AlphaTango if France is your first EU country. Camera drones under 250 g must still register.
  2. Label the drone with your operator number.
  3. Check Géoportail at your exact spot.
  4. Fly below 120 m, in daylight, in sight, and away from people, monuments and nature reserves.

Normandy's coast, the Loire Valley countryside and rural Provence are good places to start. Read drone laws in France and flying a drone in Paris.

Which drone for a France trip

A sub-250 g drone like the DJI Mini 5 Pro needs no training certificate in France, only registration, and its 1-inch sensor handles soft countryside light. Keep it packed in Paris. Before you go, read flying in Europe as a US tourist.
