Near it, yes. Over it, no. You can photograph the Mackinac Bridge from a legal launch spot on shore, under FAA rules. What you can't do is fly over the bridge's traffic: recreational pilots may not fly over moving vehicles, and Part 107 pilots face strict limits on it. Where you take off matters too, since the shoreline at each end is park land with its own rules.

The FAA limits
- No flying over moving vehicles for recreational pilots. The bridge carries traffic around the clock, so stay off to the side.
- Stay at or below 400 ft above the ground or water. The towers rise more than 500 ft above the water, so you can't fly as high as the tower tops for fun.
- Keep the drone in sight. The bridge is about 5 miles long; you won't see a small drone at the far end.
- Check airspace. There are small airports in St. Ignace and on Mackinac Island, and Pellston Regional Airport is to the south. Check B4UFLY or Aloft before each flight.
Michigan's state drone law preempts local drone ordinances, so the main rules are FAA rules plus whoever owns your launch spot.
Launch spots at each end
- Michilimackinac State Park at the south end in Mackinaw City is run by Mackinac State Historic Parks, a separate state commission. Ask before flying there.
- Straits State Park in St. Ignace is a DNR park. The DNR allows recreational drones in state parks, but not within 100 yards of historic or cultural sites, over occupied beaches, campgrounds or restrooms. Commercial flights need written permission. See Michigan state parks.
- Private property and businesses along the shore, with permission.
Mackinac Island
Most of Mackinac Island is Mackinac Island State Park, managed by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission. Ask the park before you fly anywhere on the island, including near Fort Mackinac and Arch Rock. The City of Mackinac Island also has its own drone ordinance: city code Sec. 38-242 says no one may operate a drone in the airspace above the city without a permit from the city council, reviewed mainly for the risk to the island's working horses. Violations are civil infractions. Michigan's drone law limits local ordinances, but get the permit or skip it. The island's downtown, ferry docks and hotels are crowded in summer.
The Labor Day Bridge Walk
The annual Labor Day Bridge Walk draws large crowds onto the bridge, with heavy security. Don't fly near it.
Wind over the Straits
The Straits of Mackinac funnel wind between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Gusts over open water can overwhelm a small drone, especially on the return leg. Check the wind before launching, fly upwind first, and keep a 30% battery reserve. Cold lake air also shortens battery life.
Which drone
The 249 g DJI Mini 5 Pro and Mini 4 Pro need no recreational registration and have the zoom and image quality to capture the bridge from a safe distance. The DJI Neo is best for calm-day clips close to shore. For the full state rules, read Michigan drone laws. Before your trip, pass the free TRUST test.
Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
