Can you fly a drone at Garden of the Gods?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

No. Garden of the Gods is a City of Colorado Springs park, and the park's posted rules and regulations say "No drones." That covers the Central Garden trails, Balanced Rock and the rest of the park. A sub-250 g drone is covered too; weight only matters for FAA registration, not for park rules.

Drones around Garden of the Gods
Garden of the Gods bans drones, and Colorado state parks allow them only in designated areas. National forest land and private property can work if the airspace allows it.

Why the ban

Garden of the Gods is a free city park and a National Natural Landmark, and one of the busiest parks in Colorado. The main reasons for the rule:

  • Crowds. Trails and overlooks are packed most of the year, and recreational pilots can't fly over people.
  • Climbers. Technical climbers use the sandstone fins, and a drone near a rope team is a real hazard.
  • Wildlife. Raptors and other birds nest on the rock formations.

Rangers can cite you under city park rules. Colorado doesn't preempt local drone rules, so Colorado Springs can set its own limits on city land.

Other no-fly spots near Colorado Springs

  • Cheyenne Mountain State Park and other state parks: Colorado Parks and Wildlife rules (#100.C.24) allow radio-controlled models only in designated areas. Ask the park office before bringing a drone.
  • Military sites: the US Air Force Academy, Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever, Fort Carson and Cheyenne Mountain all restrict drones.
  • Colorado Springs Airport sits in Class C airspace over the southeast side of the city. Get LAANC authorization in controlled airspace.
  • Other city parks and open spaces, such as Red Rock Canyon Open Space, have their own rules. Check with Colorado Springs Parks before you launch.

Where you can fly nearby

  • Pike National Forest surrounds Pikes Peak and much of the Front Range west of town. National forests generally allow recreational drones outside designated wilderness and temporary flight restrictions.
  • Private land, with the owner's permission and an airspace check.
  • Pikes Peak Highway is run by the city. Ask before flying anywhere on the toll road or summit area.

Wildfire TFRs are common in dry months. Check B4UFLY or Aloft before every flight and never fly near smoke.

Flying at altitude

Colorado Springs sits around 6,000 ft, and the air is thinner higher up. Expect shorter flight times, stronger afternoon wind and faster battery drain in the cold. Keep a bigger reserve than you would at sea level.

Before you fly in Colorado

  1. Pass the free TRUST test.
  2. Register drones of 250 g or more at FAA DroneZone.
  3. Confirm the land manager: city, state, federal or private.
  4. Stay at or below 400 ft and keep the drone in sight.

For forest shots near Pikes Peak, the DJI Mini 5 Pro and Mini 4 Pro weigh 249 g and fit in a daypack. The DJI Neo is fine for quick selfies on private land. More rules are in Colorado drone laws.

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
