No, unless you have an approved photography permit. Valley of Fire is a Nevada state park, and its park rules answer "Can I fly my drone?" directly: drones are not allowed in the park unless you have an approved Photography Permit, because the park has daily helicopter landings and drones pose a high risk to them. The same page says the use of drones or any remote-controlled aircraft is not allowed. That covers the Fire Wave, Elephant Rock and White Domes.

How to fly legally
- Contact the park well before your trip about a photography and filming permit. The park posts its Photo and Filming Application on the rules page.
- Expect commercial terms. Weddings and content shoots fall under the permit process, often with a fee.
- Carry your permit and show it to rangers if asked.
Sub-250 g drones are covered. Weight only matters for FAA registration.
Why the park restricts drones
- Crowded trails and viewpoints. The Fire Wave and Mouse's Tank trails are busy, and recreational pilots can't fly over people.
- Wildlife. Desert bighorn sheep, desert tortoises and raptors live in the park.
- Fragile rock and petroglyphs. A crash can damage sandstone and cultural sites.
- Heat. Summer temperatures above 110°F can overheat batteries and drones.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Valley of Fire borders Lake Mead National Recreation Area, run by the National Park Service, where launching, landing or operating drones is prohibited under NPS rules (36 CFR 1.5) unless the superintendent approves it. Don't drift across the boundary.
Nevada law
- Airports (NRS 493.109): flying within 5 miles of a public airport is a misdemeanor without the operator's consent or FAA authorization. Small rural airports count.
- Critical facilities: no flying within 500 ft of a critical facility without written consent.
- Trespass: a landowner who has told you not to fly below 250 ft over their land can sue if you do.
See Nevada drone laws.
Nearby options
- BLM land around the park generally allows recreational drones outside wilderness and TFRs. Check boundaries.
- Clark County drone parks in the Las Vegas valley. See Las Vegas drone laws.
- Red Rock Canyon is BLM land with its own rules and wilderness areas. See Red Rock Canyon.
Before you fly
- Pass the TRUST test.
- Register drones of 250 g or more with the FAA.
- Get park permission.
- Check airspace; Nellis Air Force Base ranges and Las Vegas airspace are nearby.
Fly at sunrise for the best light and coolest air. The 249 g DJI Mini 5 Pro and Mini 4 Pro need no recreational registration, and the DJI Neo is fine for a quick clip in a designated area. Keep batteries out of a hot car.
Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
