No. You can't legally fly a drone in Central Park as a hobbyist. New York City bans drone takeoffs and landings except at five designated model aircraft fields, and Central Park isn't one of them. Licensed Part 107 pilots can apply for an NYPD permit, but approval isn't guaranteed and takes weeks.

Why Central Park is off-limits
City law. Section 10-126(c) of the NYC Administrative Code bans taking off or landing aircraft, including drones, anywhere in the city except approved places. NYC Parks designates model aircraft fields for hobby flying, and none are in Manhattan.
The NYPD permit process. Since July 2023, the NYPD accepts applications to launch or land a drone elsewhere in the city. The operator must hold an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107, the application is due at least 30 days ahead, and the fee is $150. Recreational pilots without Part 107 can't use it.
Crowds and airspace. Central Park is packed with people, and recreational pilots may not fly over them. The park also sits inside New York's Class B airspace, near busy helicopter routes, so any flight needs FAA authorization too.
Do small drones get an exception?
No. A 135 g DJI Neo is treated the same as a larger drone under the city rule. Being under 250 g only means you don't need to register it for recreational use.
Where you can fly instead
NYC Parks lists five model aircraft fields:
- Calvert Vaux Park, Brooklyn
- Marine Park, Brooklyn
- Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens
- Forest Park, Queens
- La Tourette Park, Staten Island
Federal rules still apply at these fields. Check B4UFLY or Aloft, and get LAANC authorization if the field is in controlled airspace.
Getting Central Park shots legally
- Shoot from above, not from a drone. Observation decks and rooftops give legal high angles.
- Use a gimbal camera on the ground. A handheld from our Osmo cameras collection gets smooth walking shots along the Mall and Bethesda Terrace.
- Hire a permitted pilot for professional work. They'll handle the NYPD permit, airspace and insurance.
What about penalties?
Unauthorized drone flights in NYC can lead to a summons or arrest under city law. FAA violations can bring separate civil penalties.

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
