Can you fly a drone at the Golden Gate Bridge?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

No. The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District prohibits drones over and near the bridge, and the land at both ends is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, where the National Park Service bans drones. Drones found near the bridge can be confiscated, and the operator may be prosecuted.

Drones at the Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge district bans drones on and near the bridge, and the National Park Service land on both sides prohibits launching and landing.

Who controls the area

Three sets of rules overlap at the bridge:

  1. The bridge district. It bans drones on the bridge and its property, including the Welcome Center area, and has posted no-drone signs since 2015. Its reasons are simple: drones can fail and fall onto traffic, cyclists and pedestrians.
  2. The National Park Service. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area includes the Presidio, Crissy Field, Fort Point, Battery Spencer and the Marin Headlands. Under the 2014 NPS drone policy, launching, landing or operating a drone on park land is prohibited.
  3. The FAA. Recreational pilots can't fly over moving vehicles, and the bridge carries constant traffic. Much of San Francisco also sits under SFO's Class B airspace, so any flight in the city needs an airspace check and often LAANC authorization.

The famous viewpoints are almost all on bridge district or NPS land, which leaves no legal launch spot for a hobby flight.

Penalties

Violating the NPS ban is a federal misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $5,000 fine. The bridge district says it will track and confiscate drones and identify the operator for possible prosecution. FAA violations can bring separate civil penalties.

What about flying from a boat or across the bay?

That still doesn't work. Flying over the bridge means flying over moving vehicles, and the bridge district ban covers the airspace near the span. Boats and ferries are also a poor launch platform for most pilots, and the bay has strong wind.

Does a sub-250 g drone help?

No. The DJI Mini 5 Pro, Mini 4 Pro and Neo are all covered by the bridge and NPS bans. Being under 250 g only removes the FAA registration step for recreational flights.

Professional shoots

Film crews can apply to the bridge district for filming and photography permits, and the NPS handles its own permit requests. Expect a long lead time, a Part 107 certificate, insurance, and conditions that may still exclude drones.

Better options in the Bay Area

  • Look for legal launch spots well away from GGNRA land and SFO airspace using B4UFLY or Aloft.
  • Read our San Francisco drone laws guide for city park rules.

For other places with blanket bans, see the no-fly zones guide.
